Wrong Turn

Something which, in this case, turns out to be something of a dead-end for the majority of the group. After stumbling upon an old gas station, medical student Chris (unwisely) takes an old trunk road where he encounters a barbed wire trap and another gang of unfortunate travelers. As with so many outback horrors the premise of the film rests on this titular 'wrong turn', with the majority of the original group meeting a grisly end at the hands of a gang of cannibals in a cabin in the woods. Whilst two of their number make a narrow - and bloody - escape; the imaginatively-named 'Saw-Tooth' and 'Three-Fingers' live to eat another day.

The Hills Have Eyes

The 2006 remake of Wes Craven's 1977 classic sees a new round of 21st century victims fall prey to the same fate as their celluloid predecessors. The hapless Carter-Bukowski's are unfortunate enough to stumble upon a crooked gas station owner who directs them on a route straight into the hills of the title. Yet more spike-wheeled traps ensue, and the family is mercilessly hunted by the nuclear testing-affected mutants who roam this particular stretch of the New Mexico desert. Countless bloody encounters and an attempted rape ensue before four of the family members emerge - not unscathed, although not without giving (almost) as good as they get. Yet as in so many hillbilly-horrors their relief is short-lived, as their escape is revealed as being watched from the hillside... Sequel, anyone?

The Texas Chainsaw Massacre

The grand-daddy of all hillbilly horrors and father of countless spin-offs: the 1974 version's original tag-line set a precedent when it asked, 'Who will survive, and what will be left of them?' Not much, it would seem, as of the party of five innocents who are - once more - sent to their deaths by way of an old and empty gas station, only one lives to tell the tale. The chainsaw-wielding cannibals of Texas were based on real-life hillbilly Ed Gein, who's somewhat anti-social and murderous peccadilloes have been the inspiration for a long line of bona-fide weirdoes, from Norman Bates in Psycho to Jame Gumb in Silence of the Lambs.

Wolf Creek

All the more terrifying for the fact that it is based on real-life events, this tale of murder in the outback is one in an increasingly long line of Australian horrors which take full advantage of the wildness of the antipodean landscape. Accepting the 'help' of a sinister serial killer after they become stranded in the desolate Northern Territory, three backpackers find themselves held hostage in what is revealed to be a particularly gruesome case of history repeating. With two of his companions meeting a grisly and protracted end, one of the trio lives to tell the tale.

Deliverance

If you go down to the woods today, you're sure of a big surprise... the basic premise of all hillbilly horrors, and no more true than in this 1970s flick. An innocent canoe trip taken by four American businessmen swiftly turns sour as the remote Georgian landscape reveals the locals to be less than welcoming to outsiders in their midst. Although with a higher-than-normal ratio of survivors to hillbillies; it is the psychological violence of this film which appears to have most effect on its protagonists.

Wrong Turn 4: Bloody Beginnings was released October 25th, 2011 and stars Terra Vnesa, Dean Armstrong, Tenika Davis, Katlyn Wong, Jennifer Pudavick, Kristen Harris, Victor Zinck Jr., Scott Johnson. The film is directed by Declan O'Brien.

The film reunites Oscar winner Morgan Freeman, and actress Ashley Judd who first worked together on the 1997 action-thriller Kiss the Girls and then again in 2002 on the suspense-thriller High Crimes. Rounding out the cast are actors Nathan GambleThe Dark Knight, Harry Connick Jr. (New in Town}, and Kris Kristofferson (Blade).

Last fall we had a chance to travel to Tampa, Florida and visit the set of the movie, which is actually being filmed in 3D. We also had the chance to visit the aquarium where the movie takes place, as well as watch some filming and even meet the real Winter, who actually plays herself in the film. We also had a chance to speak with director Charles Martin Smith about shooting the film in 3D as well as actors Morgan Freeman, Ashley Judd, and Nathan Gamble who plays Sawyer in the film.

We began our tour at the Clearwater Marine Aquarium where upon arrival we were delighted to meet the real Winter, the actual dolphin whose story the film is based on. Winter plays herself in the film and not since Howard Stern in Private Parts has a mammal actually played himself or herself in a motion picture based on his or her own life story. While Winter was swimming around in her pool, we had a chance to pet her and actually feel her prosthetic fin, which felt almost real but kind of foamy. We went in to the aquarium where the 2nd-unit crew was filming a scene that involved a toy helicopter flying around the room. While there we also had an opportunity to see seals, turtles and even touch a few stingrays.

Once we left the aquarium we went to the set where actors Morgan Freeman, Ashley Judd, and Nathan Gamble were shooting a scene. In the movie Nathan Gamble plays Sawyer, the boy that rescues Winter and Ashley Judd is his mother, while Morgan Freeman portrays Dr. McCarthy. The scene they were shooting involves Sawyer asking the doctor to build a prosthetic fin for Winter. It was shot in 3D and we had a chance to watch it in playback on a 3D screen.

While they were setting up for the next shot we were joined by actress Ashley Judd, who was gracious enough to answer a few questions. The actress began by telling us what it was that she liked about the script. "I didn't know it was true story when I was reading it. When I was done I thought that the writer needed to be taken out and shot! This is just so emotionally manipulative, and how dare they have the audacity to incorporate every touching storyline imaginable," she explained.

"A little boy abandoned by his father who idolizes his hero cousin who's a great athlete and a soldier too. That's criminal. Then I saw seewinter.com and it dawned on me that it was a true story. Then I thought it would be a wonderful thing to be a part of. I'm also turning in my first manuscript so the schedule was attractive too," Ashley Judd continued. "It gave me plenty of time to finish the book while being on a show with people I really enjoy."

Iconic entertainer W.C. Fields once said never work with animals or children, and since Ashley Judd is working with both as well as 3D in this film, the actress talked about W.C. Fields' legendary warning. "I think that children and animals can be uniquely humiliating to grown-ups, but so far both of ours have behaved extremely well ... with an assist from child labor laws and good union rules. When we did the schedule and signed the contract the production also quoted Mr. W.C. Fields and said, 'some things may change over which we have no control. Please be as flexible as you can.' Who can predict what happens with all these dynamics, but so far so good," she finished.

We asked the actress if thinks that it adds a certain authenticity to the film to have the actual Winter playing herself? "Oh, absolutely," Ashley Judd concurred. "I'm very moved by her. Someone I work with at home who loves animals sent me an e-mail today knowing I was on the set saying, 'please give that dolphin my most profound regards.' My eyes welled up. She's a very special animal, as is her surrogate mother."

We followed up by asking Ashley Judd if she's gotten a chance to actually swim with Winter in her tank. "I haven't gotten in the tank yet but I have been around her at the aquarium. She's lovely. It's also fun for me to see her play on her own, really see her spirit. Isn't it great how the stuff the production built for her they made look old so it wouldn't look incongruous? In the film the aquarium is having a lot of funding troubles and is about to collapse, so even though we built a new tank it's movie making magic," she explained.

Since director Charles Martin Smith is a former actor himself, we asked Ashley Judd if that experience was helpful to her as an actress on the set. "I think so. He cares a lot about the performances and he gives us plenty of feedback, plenty of time. He really pays close attention to the subtle connective tissue that other directors overlook," she said. We followed up by asking Ashley Judd which of Charles Martin Smith's past performances is her favorite. "Well I haven't called him 'Toad' yet. I think American Graffiti in particular because we lived in Marin, CA when it was being filmed. Mr. George Lucas is a great hero of mine both personally and professionally. I was pretty young to see the film, and didn't necessarily appreciate it for what it was, but I related to his character because he was funny. He's actually what stood out the most for me."

Finally, the actress talked about working with Nathan Gamble, the young actor who plays Sawyer in the film. "It's been wonderful. I really enjoy kids and he is a lovely young man. The first day he had to do a really big moment, and he totally blew me away! He was incredible. He's impressed me, because child actors can be these little professionals," Ashley Judd explained. "But he manages to be both a kid and respectful/appropriate on the set. He does the work in a way that's very becoming to him and the production. I was looking at him today and thought that little 10-year-old girls need to watch out!"

We followed up by asking Nathan Gamble what it's like working with Morgan Freeman on the film. "Oh, he's a blast, he's really just a fun guy to work with. He's so funny and his voice is so broad. He has all these great stories about when he was younger. Harry Connick Jr. was telling me he used to be on the The Electric Company and he showed me all these videos. We were laughing over it," explained Nathan Gamble. "Did you see the one where he's taking a bath in a casket? He's taking a bath in a coffin and we thought that was funny."

The young actor went on to discuss the difference between shooting scenes with the actors and shooting scenes with the different animals in the film. "I guess the difference is, instead of waiting around on usually just the camera stuff, it's waiting around on what Winter does. The whole set is based on what she's doing. If Winter's in a bad mood, we're all in a bad mood. And if she's in a good mood, we're all in a good one. We revolve around Winter," he explained.

Nathan Gamble also described the character he plays in the movie, Sawyer. "He's very timid, he's very shy and nervous. He has this background where he feels like everything is his fault. He thinks the reason his dad left is because of him, or the reason Kyle's hurt is his fault. Now Winter might die and he thinks that's on him as well, because he didn't do as much as he could have. But you can see the change when he meets Winter, he's more outgoing, he's more cooperative, and stuff like that."

Since the film is based on a true story, we asked the young actor what kind of research he did for his role. "Well, I was given a book, actually it's called 'Winter's Tale,' and it just explains everything, all the prosthetic stuff. It's a crazy story, if you think about it. If you were to pitch something like, oh yeah, we're going to put a prosthetic tail on a tailless dolphin,' I'd say you were crazy. But it really is a crazy story and it's true."

We continued our conversation by asking Nathan Gamble what it's been like for him working with the 3D cameras. "It's a gigantic box with a camera lens on it. It has been different," he said. "We have a rehearsal then a mechanical rehearsal, as we have to do all this different stuff with the 3D. It's very difficult with all that stuff. I'm pretty sure it's going to look awesome in the end."

Next up, we had a chance to speak with the film's director Charles Martin Smith. With all the legendary directors that he's worked with as an actor, is there one that has come to mind most while making this film. "Yes I remember all of them. Well I think it is just because I learned so much from him on that one. It was really, really helpful to me. I stayed on that movie for a long time, not just shooting it but then I was around through post as well."

We followed up by asking Charles Martin Smith if working on Never Cry Wolf, and Air Bud prepared him for working with animals on this movie. "It helps to know what you are up against and I have. I learned a lot about filmmaking from Carroll Ballard who did Never Cry Wolf and I think that the man is an absolute genius. I learned so much from him and I always carry around in the back of my head, 'what would Carroll do if he were shooting this.'"

The director also spoke about his choice to direct this film in 3D. "I'd like to say that it was my idea because I think it is working out beautifully but it wasn't. It was something that Alcon Entertainment thought of," he explained. "I was already writing and we were moving towards making the film when they came up with the idea and came to me. They said, what do you think about doing this think in 3D? At first, I thought it didn't call for it really, but then I began to think what you could do, especially with the underwater stuff, and I got very excited about it."

"Immediately I began studying up on 3D and all of that. We are really making an effort to use it in all of the sets," he continued. "If you notice on this set we've got lots of sort of lines converging and we're shooting in deep spaces. I wanted to use the 3D not as a gimmick to have things come out at the audience but to use it as a device to draw you in to the frame much more than having stuff come out at you. I'm focusing more on the 3D and it does change the process a little bit," explained the director. "I'm aware that is better to not be too cutty. You don't want a lot of fast cuts with 3D because it takes your eye so long to adjust to the frame. Actually every frame that you look at in 3D, there is so much in it and your eye doesn't just travel across the screen like it does in normal movies but it also goes in and out and so on. So you want to hold on shots a little bit longer. So I'm trying to design it that way."

Finally, we asked the director if this was the first time that he has worked with Kris Kristofferson since he died in his arms in Sam Peckinpah's Pat Garrett and Billy the Kid. "That's right," replied Charles Martin Smith. "We've bumped into each other a couple of times over the years. He had just seen that film and that particular scene on television," explained Charles Martin Smith. "We were talking about it and reminiscing about Sam and all the craziness on that film."

Morgan Freeman also talked about the luxury of working with Charles Martin Smith, an actor-turned-filmmaker. "Generally it's much easier to work with actor/directors versus writer/directors. The reason is that actor/directors know a lot more about what you're going through. Whereas writer/directors in large part know all of the characters intimately, so it's hard to get them out of your hair."

The legendary actor discussed with us some of his theories on the craft of acting. "You know the trick to any profession is making it look easy. So you're not supposed to see me acting. That's what I work for, that's what we all work for, so you don't see the wheels turning," he said. "Listening is the biggest part of it," Morgan Freeman continued. "Listening engages you with the other actor. Then once you're engaged, you don't really have to act you just react. I think I learned that somewhere in my thirties."

Next, we asked Morgan Freeman about having a chance to reunite with Ashley Judd for a third time on this film. "Ashley and I, aside from having a life outside of movies, we've done two together now and we just have this nice feeling for each other," he explained. "I'm always looking forward to not just seeing her, but acting with her. She's a marvel. She's got so many things going, she's so powerful and a very driven lady."

"It's a nice little family movie, it's a nice feel good movie and they're good to do every now and then when a good one comes your way," Morgan Freeman said explaining why he chose to do the film. "It's hard to find a good script. They're just not falling out of the sky all over the place. Amazingly we don't have a lot of great writers left because, and this is my opinion, but there was too much demand that they get burned out. You can't just sit down and continue to grind out good scripts. You won't have it in you. So we've got blogs, we've got the Internet, we've got television, and we've got DVDs. I mean the demand is just too high. So for a writer to sit down and come up with a good one now, they're few and far between," said the actor.

Joan Allen will portray Pam Landy and Albert Finney is set to play Dr. Albert Hirsch, both of whom are key members in the Treadstone program. It isn't clear as of yet how these characters will come into play in The Bourne Legacy. Jeremy Renner has already signed on to star as another pupil of the Treadstone program, not Jason Bourne.

Tony Gilroy, who wrote all three movies in the Jason Bourne trilogy, The Bourne Identity, The Bourne Supremacy, and The Bourne Ultimatum, will write and direct The Bourne Legacy. Rachel Weisz and Oscar Isaac also star, with Edward Norton in talks to portray the villain.

It isn't clear when The Bourne Legacy will start production.

Last week, I journeyed north to ILM to speak with two of the men responsible for the animated hit Rango, which hits the shelves on Blu-ray and DVD on July 15. The movie was quite a success, both critically and financially, and it also was a first for both Paramount Pictures and ILM. Rango is the first stand-alone animated feature which Paramount distributed themselves (the studio usually distributed DreamWorks Animation projects, with the most recent example being Kung Fu Panda 2). Rango also was the first movie which ILM fully animated, as opposed to being hired to work on bits and pieces of animation or animated special effects.

One of the people we spoke to was animation director Hal Hickel, an Oscar-winning visual effects artists who joined ILM as an animator in the late 90s. Although he has served as an animator and animation supervisor on blockbusters such as Iron Man and the pirate trilogy Pirates of The Caribbean: The Curse of The Black Pearl, Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest, and Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End with Rango director Gore Verbinski. Perhaps ironically for an animation supervisor, Rango is Hal Hickel's first animated movie.

Hal Hickel spoke at length about several aspects of Rango with our assembled press corps, including the specific designs for these animated animal characters, which are based on real creatures in nature... to an extent.

He also talked about some of the Western movie influences they used in creating this animated town of Dirt, the characters who inhabit it, and how the aspect of actual dirt itself played into the movie.

Hal Hickel also talked a bit about the character of Rango, and how he evolved into this bizarre chameleon hybrid creature.

We also spoke with the man most responsible for animating Rango himself, Kevin Martel. He got his start as a character animator on Star Wars: Episode I - The Phantom Menace and has worked on a slew of blockbusters since then, including this summer's hit Super 8. Kevin Martel first spoke about how it helps as an animator to be able to relate to the character you're working on, and that he definitely could relate to Rango.

Kevin Martel also talked about how the live ensemble recordings of the voice actors aided in his work. He showed us some of the raw footage of the recording, with Johnny Depp recording a scene where he's mocking other characters while walking behind them. We saw this scene in this raw, live-action scene, the animatic, a rough animation pass, and the final scene. It was very intriguing to see how the scene develops each step of the way. He also talked about how this animated environment allowed Gore Verbinski more control as a director.

Of course, you can't have a Western without a cowboy hat, and Kevin Martel told us that Gore Verbinski wanted Rango to wear his hat in a unique way. He showed us a lot of early tests they did, with Rango wearing hats in several different ways. You wouldn't think that the simple act of wearing a hat would be given much thought in a film, but that's obviously not the case.

One of the unique things about Rango as a character is the weird little crook in his neck, a trait that Kevin Martel doesn't even notice after working on the film for so long.

After both interviews were done, we were treated to lunch at the massive ILM commissary and a tour of this phenomenal facility, which features historic cinematic landmarks such as R2D2, Yoda, and even Han Solo in carbonite at every turn. While I have seen all of these items on previous visits, as I said before, that doesn't make them any less awesome.

That about wraps up my trip to Industrial Light and Magic for Rango, which hits the shelves on Blu-ray and DVD on July 15.

Rango was released March 4th, 2011 and stars Johnny Depp, Isla Fisher, Abigail Breslin, Ned Beatty, Alfred Molina, Bill Nighy, Stephen Root, Harry Dean Stanton. The film is directed by Gore Verbinski.

Living in Los Angeles, one knows that there are several things this town has an abundance of. Sure, there is too much smog and traffic, but one of the good things about L.A. is there is no shortage of live music venues. From the slew of clubs on Hollywood's Sunset Strip to downtown's L.A. Live venue, Los Angelenos have a wide variety of places to check out live music. Last week, CityWalk, Universal City's sprawling outdoor mall and entertainment complex, added its own live music arena, 5 Towers. The state-of-the-art stage was put to great use right off the bat, with a FREE concert by none other than music sensation and The Voice judge Cee-Lo Green.

The Voice also had another presence at the Thursday night event, with Season 1 winner Javier Colon on hand to officially "plug in" this massive 5 Towers stage, which practically dwarfs the movie theater right behind it. It didn't take long for the massive crowd to gather around this state-of-the-art stage, and they soon became restless for Cee-Lo Green, chanting his name before his eventual arrival on stage.

After watching The Voice this season, I knew that Cee-Lo Green could come on stage wearing the most outlandish of outfits. Surprisingly, he breezed on stage wearing his trademark shades, baggy jeans, and a vintage t-shirt featuring Robert De Niro's cherished character from Taxi Driver, Travis Bickle. Oh, and, of course, some bling. He kicked off the night with his latest hit, "Bright Lights, Bigger City," followed by "I Like It." It's clear he has the top-notch skills to work a crowd and his energetic enthusiasm simply electrified the crowd.

He also treated the audience to an unusual cover song: a "dude" version of The Pussycat Dolls' hit/overplayed song "Don't Cha," which was actually quite hilarious. Although his Gnarles Barkley cohort Danger Mouse was not in attendance, that didn't stop Cee-Lo Green from doing a solo version of the hit single "Crazy." It was a very intriguing song since he replaced the more upbeat and infectious tempo of the album version with a more subdued 70s-style beat with a little bit of techno thrown in as well.

As he kept on performing, anyone could notice that the audience started to be less and less involved with each song. Clearly they were waiting for something, and Cee-Lo Green knew it. He joked that they weren't enthusiastic enough, especially since it was a free concert. It only took one tiny sample from DJ Rashida to whip the crowd into a frenzy once again. Naturally, that sample was the first few opening moments of Cee-Lo Green's blockbuster song "Fuck You." When he finally broke into the song after a few minutes of teasing the audience, the place went berzerk. It was a perfect way to close out the night at this amazing new concert venue.

While Cee-Lo Green was the first to perform at 5 Towers at CityWalk, he certainly won't be the last. 5 Towers has free shows lined up all throughout the summer. Their "Close to Home" concert series runs on Friday nights from 7 PM to 10 PM, which features some of the Los Angeles area's up and coming talent. Saturday night will feature two bands performing each night throughout the summer, while Sunday brings a Latin flavor with Jam on CityWalk with Telemundo and mun2.

Part of the festivities was a costume contest, which saw numerous die-hard fans dressed up as their favorite characters such as Gandalf, Saruman, and many others. They were all vying for several LOTR-related prizes, including the whopper of a grand prize: a one-week trip to New Zealand to visit several trilogy-related locales, including the WETA special effects house. Two of WETA's own, Richard Taylor and Daniel Falconer, even took time out of their busy schedules working on The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey, to judge the finalists via Skype. The winner, Nicole Roberts, impressed the judges with her unique "showgirl" rendition of a Balrog to take home the grand prize. Nearly all of the finalists made the costumes by hand, showing their true loyalty to this epic franchise.

Also on hand to help celebrate this Blu-ray were cast members John Noble, who played Denethor in The Lord of The Rings: The Return of The King, and Sala Baker, who played Sauron, Man Flesh Uruk, and several Orcs throughout the entire Lord of the Rings trilogy. John Noble first talked about celebrating this franchise, nearly 10 years after The Lord of the Rings: Fellowship of the Ring first hit theaters.

While John Noble is now quite well known as Walter Bishop on the Fox TV series Fringe (clickHere to read what he had to say about Season 4), he still does consider his time on The Lord of The Rings as an unparalleled experience.

John Noble also said that he still to this day gets recognized out in public as Denethor just as much as his Walter Bishop role on Fringe.

New Zealand-born actor-stuntman Sala Baker made his feature film debut as both an actor and stuntman in The Lord of the Rings: Fellowship of the Ring as Sauron. He also performed in various other acting and stuntman capacities on The Lord of The Rings: The Two Towers and The Lord of The Rings: The Return of The King, which is quite an undertaking for a first feature.

Sala Baker didn't have to think long when asked for the biggest highlight for him while working on the trilogy.

Since The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey is currently in production, the actor-stuntman said he plans to lobby for director Peter Jackson to bring him on board.

After the interviews were done and all of the prizes were handed out, they put on a fantastic fireworks display for the fans, just before the clock struck midnight, which was a fantastic way to cap off this special event. Besides, how many times do I get to say I saw a big pyrotechnic display in a Best Buy parking lot?

That about wraps up my night at The Lord of The Rings: The Motion Picture Trilogy Extended Edition Blu-ray release, which is available on high-def shelves everywhere right now.

Dear Lemon Lima was released March 4th, 2011 and stars Melissa Leo, Meaghan Jette Martin, Elaine Hendrix, Beth Grant, Vanessa Marano, Zane Huett, Chase Wright Vanek, Savanah Wiltfong. The film is directed by Suzi Yoonessi.

After a nice reception for the massive press corps assembled for this event, we were in for a little treat. Anyone who is familiar with Pixar knows the studio is just as well-known for their animated shorts as they are their animated features. Before every Pixar movie, the studio debuts a new short film, and Cars 2 is no different. While most of the Pixar shorts show off brand new characters and the talents of new directors within Pixar's ranks, the short that will play in front of Cars 2 will feature some familiar faces.

Toy Story: Hawaiian Vacation brings Woody and the gang back together for a brief new adventure, and after watching the full short film, I have to say it was great to see them again. Back in November, we reported that Toy Story 3 will be the last feature film in this franchise, although the franchise would live on through new shorts. Toy Story: Hawaiian Vacation centers on Ken (Michael Keaton) and Barbie (Jodi Benson) who think they're going on vacation to Hawaii, after they sneak in Bonnie's backpack. Little do they know that Bonnie didn't take her backpack on vacation, and Ken is heartbroken to learn that he's really just in Bonnie's room... or is he? Woody (Tom Hanks) Buzz (Tim Allen) and the rest of the gang decide to make a Hawaiian vacation for Ken and Barbie right in Bonnie's room. They serve the couple dinner in the most romantic setting they could scrounge up, and the whole gang does their best to recreate the tropical island setting in the bedroom. It's a charming little story about the power of friendship, and that a little imagination can go a long way.

I can't imagine that anyone who is a fan of the Toy Story franchise will be disappointed by Toy Story: Hawaiian Vacation when it hits theaters this week, and there are more Toy Story shorts on the horizon. We reported in February that there will be another Toy Story short attached to The Muppets, when it hits theaters on November 23. I'll admit that it is a bit sad that we won't see a fourth full-length feature adventure with Woody and Buzz, but it's great that the studio is keeping this franchise alive, one short at a time.

We then see a scene where Lightning McQueen (Owen Wilson) is invited to the World Grand Prix, an international race which features cars from every racing discipline in the world competing on special hybrid tracks which implements each of these unique styles (Formula 1, rally car, NASCAR, Le Mans, etc.) to determine who is the best overall race car in the world. Naturally, Lightning brings along his new BFF Mater (Larry The Cable Guy), who now serves on Lightning's pit crew. Unfortunately, Mater's bumbling ways end up costing Lighting a race in Tokyo, although it sets up the international intrigue to follow.

This footage really opens up the entire world of Cars, showing us that they do fly on planes like humans would, and they even "relieve" themselves like we would, in bathrooms. Finn McMissile and his spy sidekick Holley Shiftwell (Emily Mortimer) have also journeyed to the Tokyo race, where they have followed the special camera, although, unfortunately for them, Mater throws a monkey wrench into their plans. When Mater heads off to relieve himself in a Japanese bathroom (a scene which is quite hilarious, by the way), he inadvertently interrupts the baddies ambushing another spy, Rod "Torque" Redline (Bruce Campbell). The bad cars are trying to get a special device off of Redline, but the spy plants it on the undercarriage of Mater as he leaves the bathroom. Unfortunately, during all of this, Mater is still talking to Lightning McQueen over his headset, and accidentally gives his racing friend some bad advice, which costs him the race and damages their friendship.

I have to say, overall, I was incredibly impressed with the footage I saw. They found a wonderful way to transport the viewers from picturesque Radiator Springs (which is shown after the opening spy sequence), to this international world of espionage and intrigue. Oddly enough, the impetus for making Cars 2 a spy movie came from a deleted scene from the original Cars. There was a scene where Lightning and Holly were going on a date at a drive-in movie theater, where they were watching a spy movie with a character called Finn McMissile. I don't think I've ever heard about a sequel springing from a deleted scene before, but that just goes to show you that the folks at Pixar can think outside the box better than any studio on Earth.

We were also able to speak with several of the behind-the-scenes players at Pixar who helped shape and mold the expansive world of Cars 2. Production designer Harley Jessup revealed that, once they had the spy motif in play for the sequel, they turned to live-action movies such as The Italian Job, Rendezvous, The Bourne Identity, and The Red Balloon to get a better feel for this covert world. They also took a series of research trips which influenced the animated set pieces. They visited Tokyo, Italy, Paris and London, taking extensive notes on each city to find a way how to animate each distinct place. Director of Photography Sharon Calahan also revealed more details which indicate this animated world isn't much different than our own. For instance, in London, they still have British pubs, although these characters are sucking down pints of motor oil instead of pints of beer.

Andrew Schmidt also talked about more specific designs when it came to vehicular changes in Cars 2, including an overhaul of the Lightning McQueen character.

Jerome Ranft revealed that Lightning McQueen's nickname from the first movie, "Stickers," is now a thing of the past.

Andrew Schmidt also discussed the intricate details that go into distinguishing a male car from a female car in this universe.

While we got a brief glimpse at how truly enormous this animated world really is we learned even more from Jay Ward, the "franchise guardian" for Cars and Cars 2. He talked about how they expanded the universe for this international race.

For this World Grand Prix race, each car has this "shield" on the side of the car that displays the racing number and what country each car comes from. They also created their own racing leagues, based off Formula 1, GTS, and many other international racing organizations. Jay Ward also said the colors of each car helps the viewers determine, from just a glance, which country they come from.

Jay Ward also talked about Lightning McQueen's new racing rival, a Formula 1-type car named Francesco Bernouli, who is voiced by John Turturro.
