We recently caught up with director Parris Patton to discuss the DVD release, which is in stores starting today, Tuesday, May 15th.

Here is our conversation.

Obvious, stupid question first...Are you related to Mike Patton?

Parris Patton: No. Not at all. I saw a video...I forgot what it was for...But strangely enough, he looks a lot like me. I haven't been following his new projects so much. But, you know, from the old days...Yeah, I'm a fan.

The most compelling aspect of the movie, for me at least, are these kids in this van, who tour alongside the Warped Tour, stopping at every venue to sell their CDs. Can you give us an update on where they're at right now?

Parris Patton: Joe Candelaria and the guys from Forever Came Calling have a new drummer. They signed a little indie deal. They were offered a couple of things because of the film, actually. But they didn't feel they were up to that level. They had a few people approach them about working together. But it felt above their pay scale. They are very humble, and they know where they belong, basically. There was a little indie record label that picked them up. And I think they are going to start touring again in two weeks. They are always touring. They are in the same van. The music is better. They have an album they are releasing, I think, right before they go out on tour. It might be coming out now. I am not 100% sure. I just spoke to Joe last week. He is doing really good. Chillin' at 29 Palms, just getting ready to go back out on the road. There's a lot happening with those guys.

When you say 'same van', did they get that thing fixed?

Parris Patton: Well, you know...They fix it as it breaks. They still don't have any money. Something goes wrong, they fix it up. It hasn't been given a complete overhaul or anything. No.

How did you find those guys?

Parris Patton: I stumbled upon them as you are watching the film. I was already filming when I met them. I was doing fan interviews down the line before we went into cover the bands we were doing. I saw this guy selling CDs in line. I liked him immediately. So I listened to his music. He made me realize that there is this whole subculture of people who do that. They sell CDs in line, trying to make it from one city to the next in hopes of being pulled out of the line and put on stage. His music and his story, and his personality, was appealing to me. So I decided to follow them throughout. I met them in San Francisco, which I think was, maybe, the third stop...Something like that. It was the second or third stop. So I met them the moment the audience meets them.

What do you think they brought that might not have been there had you not done those line interviews?

Parris Patton: What was needed to make this film more than just a concert documentary...And I tried to do this with everybody...Was just to dig into the personal stories of these musicians. It's not what you see on stage. It's not what you think they are going to be, really...But Joe's journey was full of peril. While everyone who is in a band on The Warped Tour...If you get on The Warped Tour, you get a guaranteed, and the bands spend some of that guaranteed getting on a bus. Because the tour is so brutal. Doing it in a van is ridiculous. But obviously, Joe didn't have that. He had to take a pretty brutal journey to accomplish his dream. That is what a great journey is made of. Without that...I think about that often...I don't know what I would have done. I would have had a completely different film. Adding that story gave the film some heart, and a true arc, through his character. That is what Joe brought to this story, and I don't know what I would have done without that.

So much time has passed since you shot this to right now, today. What do you think about the progress in that span of time, that these guys we are watching, have made?

Parris Patton: Yeah, you know...I haven't kept up with Mark Posner. I saw Chris Drew at one of our in-store parties. He seems to be doing the same thing he was doing. He just has a million fans, and he is touring all the time. Mitch from Suicide Silence, I have seen him a couple of times. They are doing exactly what they are doing in the film in a lot of ways. Just trying to figure out how to reach more people, and touring. That is what it's all about. I don't know if Posner is sitting in s studio somewhere, reaping the benefits of his radio success. For the most part, it's still a grind for these guys. Obviously, they love it. But it is just so hard to get to that level where you don't need to be on the road. It takes a long time and a massive amount of fans, obviously. It seems like most of them are doing what they were doing, just with a lot more fans. Because they have been out there longer.

You end the film with Pennywise, right?

Parris Patton: They are in there. I don't think they are the actual end of the film. The actual last word goes to The Exposed. They were like a catering band. It was one of the stories that didn't really make it into the film. But I thought he summed it up nicely, like, when how you get off the road you see your girlfriend, your pets, your family, and then within a week, you are itching to get back on the road. But Pennywise is in there. And Fletcher has great interview. He gave us the title to the film. It was great having access to those guys.

You don't focus too much on some of these bigger bands, who've been touring with The Warped Tour since it started. I'm forty years old, and I didn't know most of these guys that get the majority of the spotlight here.

Parris Patton: Me neither. You know, it kind of worked out this way. Andrew W.K. was the headliner, and we did get a lot of great interviews with him. And some great performances. We got them from everybody. But they just didn't fit into the film. It felt like the film was more wanting to be about kids on the rise, and how The Warped Tour helps to accommodate that. It felt like the film wanted to go that way. I'm trying to think of who else...The Casualties were there. But only on the last bit of the tour. Some of the biggest bands were only there for the last few days. Like the Dropkick Murphys, the Casualties, even Pennywise. I don't know that they did the entire tour. They may have, but we didn't catch up with them until the end. It was like that. This is where the film wanted to go. I think a lot of people were expecting to see more of a punk rock retrospective type thing. The truth is, most of the bands on the Warped Tour, for the most part, are new. Kevin Lyman is always looking to see who is going to be big in the following year. What are the kids listening to now? Not what do 40 year olds want to see that they saw twenty years ago...Well, it was seventeen years ago...A lot of it has to do with Kevin Lyman looking ahead. We would give Kevin Lyman CDs for his daughter to listen to. He was choosing bands for the tour that way. That shows you were he thinks the audience is, to keep the show going.

That's where it needs to be. I'm not going to the Warped Tour anytime soon, I don't care who is playing. It's a kids demographic.

Parris Patton: Yeah.

How did you mix the interviews with the behind-the-scenes footage to build the narrative arc you were after?

Parris Patton: I wanted the film to be as verite as possible. I really wanted to plant the audience on the tour, so it felt like they were experiencing it. A lot of the B roll photography, watching the crews set up, and stuff like that...It had to do with giving a sense of what it's like to be out there...With the interviews, they were more about the personal stories. You can try for fifteen and a half months to film a certain event, like a stage dive, or some fantastic thing that happens on the tour to make the film remarkable...Chances are, something like that...If it does happen, you're not going to get it...What you can do is go back to the stories about the people, and how they are feeling about the whole thing. That was the mentality going in. By interviewing Kevin Lyman, and the crewmembers that set it all up...That gives audiences a sense of the family that really makes this thing run. I tried not to say that, I just wanted people to experience that. So I added as little commentary as possible. That's why there is no voice over in the film. We just try to let it play out as naturally as possible.

I've only seen the theatrical release. What can we expect to see on the DVD in terms of extra content?

Parris Patton: I was really happy to have a ton of footage. I shot nearly three hundred hours of footage. When it came to doing the DVD extras, all the bands that I, unfortunately, couldn't put into the film...I was able to put together a nice little piece on each one of them. There are about ten eight-to-twelve minute pieces on the bands that I followed, that didn't make the film. You get some of the bigger names, like Bring Me The Horizon, The Casualties, and Pennywise. Then there were the smaller guys I followed quite a bit. They just didn't make it into the film. I am really happy with the bonus pack. I hope people check it out. I think it adds quite a bit. I think we wound up with great bonus material just by virtue of having so much stuff.

No Room for Rockstars was released March 1st, 2012. The film is directed by Parris Patton.

Josh Trank is a filmmaker who certainly has a bright future ahead of him, after his impressive directorial debut Chronicle. The 27-year-old cut his teeth as a co-producer of Big Fan, and he wrote and directed several episodes of The Kill Point before his big break with Chronicle, a movie that manages to look and feel like it cost a lot more than it actually did. Chronicle arrives on Blu-ray and DVD May 15, and I recently had the chance to speak with Josh Trank over the phone.

Here's what he had to say below.

I was actually at the Fox presentation on the lot, where you showed us some of the footage, and that awesome short film you made. I was hoping to see it on the Blu-ray or DVD, but it doesn't seem to be on there. Is there any possibility of it being an easter egg or something?

Josh Trank: The test scene? Oh, I think the test scene is going to be on the DVD. Yeah, it's very exciting. I just saw it for the first time since then, and it was weird. It was like all that anxiety bubbled up again.

How long did it take you to shoot that?

Josh Trank: One day, just a day. We cast the thing in about a day and a half or two days, we shot it in a day, and then we did a week of post to do all the visual effects. It was a rush.

You mentioned before, when you were casting Chronicle, how difficult it was to find Andrew. Can you elaborate on that casting search some more? When you saw Dane DeHaan, did you know right away you had your guy?

Josh Trank: Yeah, it was instant. He was somebody that I and our producer, Adam Schroeder, had spotted from HBO's In Treatment. When asked by our casting director, who would be our perfect Andrew, both of us were immediately drawn to Dane DeHaan. We said, 'If we could get a guy like Dane DeHaan...' and we were just lucky enough that he loved the script and wanted to do it. We didn't need to find somebody like him, we got the guy.

It looks like there is just one deleted scene in here. Would it be safe to assume that practically everything you shot made it in to the feature?

Josh Trank: Well, not everything we shot ended up in the movie itself. There are certainly a lot of scenes that were left on the cutting room floor. The director's cut on the DVD was great, because I got to throw in some more stuff that I really feel paints a deeper dimension to some of the characters in the movie. I'm very excited about that.

How much longer is that director's cut than the theatrical cut?

Josh Trank: You'd think that I should be really good with time and stuff like that, but numbers are so abstract to me. Five minutes? 10 minutes? 25 minutes? I have no idea. I can tell you that it's long enough to make it better. I don't even remember how much longer it is, but I know we definitely did throw in a substantial amount, which I thought was missing from the original cut.

Is the additional material more from the beginning, when they're trying to figure out these powers? Or is there more towards the end?

Josh Trank: There is more stuff in the beginning. Here is a cool one. My favorite shot I got to do in the whole movie, which I'm not going to reveal, obviously, while on set I announced to everyone this was the coolest thing I've ever seen on the monitor, and it happened live. It's one of the coolest shots I've ever seen planned out and executed. I myself, separated from my own body in that moment, and took a step back. That was one of the first scenes to go from the actual cut of the film, and I'm very excited that it's going to be in the director's cut, so you'll have something to look forward to there. I challenge anybody to be able to spot that shot. It will be pretty obvious.

Great. I'm looking forward to it even more now. We talked before about the car scene, and there are some visually stunning moments I really enjoyed. When Max (Landis) was writing the script, were you planning these out that far ahead in advance, or was it more on the set, trying to figure out how to get these in camera?

Josh Trank: No, it was all very, very heavily planned out. I wrote up about a five-page long director's statement, which served as sort of the bible of the production plan moving forward. That included the approach to the camera work, which is a controlled amateurism. You assume the main character of this so-called found footage movie, is not a neurotic guy running from somebody, causing the camera to shake in a nauseating manner. There is that one person that everybody knows who can hold a camera steady, and has an eye for framing up his world. When somebody is saying something important, he impulsively knows to zoom in or get a close-up. We didn't want the style of the movie or that plan to create too much self-awareness in the audience, so there was a lot of trial and error, and things we would eventually work out on set, because you never know until you get there. I storyboarded every scene about 20 different ways, we did pre-viz on a lot of the more complicated set pieces, so we could essentially try things out before we shot them, particularly the third-act battle sequence and the flying sequences. So yeah, there was a lot of planning before we got to the day, but it was a very quick, rushed schedule.

There was a story going around that (20th Century Fox president) Tom Rothman is still hoping you will come on board for the Fantastic Four reboot. Is there anything you can say about that?

Josh Trank: It's really hilarious, almost like my answers are timed, in a way that I'm aware of subconsciously, because I just got the wrap-up (Laughs). I can't say anything about anything, in general. I always feel that you can't talk about the drawing until you're done with the drawing. That said, there is a lot of amazing stuff ahead, so you have a lot to look forward to.

We also reported awhile back that Max is writing a Chronicle sequel. Are you involved in writing that as well?

Josh Trank: Can't answer any of that. Sorry, my friend.

I loved the theatrical experience of Chronicle, but do you think that there is more value in seeing this at home on Blu-ray?

Josh Trank: I think it's the kind of movie where it's like big screen meets small screen. It's ostensibly shot by people who weren't intending on having their footage projected on a large screen. I think the experience will be both unique to the movie theater as well as the home theater. That was my perfectly-phrased, press release-y thing to say about that (Laughs).

The latest thrilling chapter of the Underworld saga is set to hit 3D Blu-ray, Blu-ray, and DVD this Tuesday, May 8th. Kate Beckinsale returns as the ultimate vampire warrioress Selene in Underworld Awakening. Having escaped years of
imprisonment, she finds herself in a changed world where humans have discovered the existence of both Vampire and Lycan clans, and are conducting an all-out war to eradicate both immortal species. Now Selene must battle the humans and a frightening new breed of super Lycans to ensure the death dealers' survival.

India Eisley (The Secret Life of the American Teenager) plays Eve in the film, daughter of Selene and one of the new super Lycans who has vampire DNA. We recently caught up with India to discuss her role in this anticipated release, along with her involvement in future installments.

Here is our conversation.

Tell me a little bit about Eve, and how she plays into the overall arc of this franchise's ongoing storyline...

India Eisley: She is the hybrid Lycan vampire child of Michael and Selene. She is a very unique character. She was basically brought up in a lab, with little to no contact with the outside world at all. She is looking for her family.

Did you study both the vampires and the lycans in those first three films, in discovering who Eve is and what she is capable of?

India Eisley: Yeah. And I enjoyed those other films. Without sounding pretentious, I really like what Michael Sheen did as a Lycan. I thought it was so good. I tried to take bits and pieces from his performance. Because she is a hybrid, I did have to get a feel for what both of these creatures were like.

We see a little more practical make-up here, in this fourth outing, as opposed to the CGI heavy first films. Does that give you a little something extra in bringing forth your performance? To have these creatures in front of you while you are acting, as opposed to looking at a tennis ball on a stick?

India Eisley: Yeah. They had a few of the real looking Lycan creatures on set. Then, they also had some really funny ones. These were stuntmen in Lycan suits. These were the people we had to fight with. It was a nice mix. It wasn't just all one, or all the other. It was all integrated. It does make it easier when you know what something looks like. And you have something to bounce off of.

The effects have improved so much since that first film came out almost ten years ago. Here, you sometimes can't tell when you are looking at a real werewolf, and when you are looking at CGI.

India Eisley: I know, that is true. (Laughs)

This is a pretty action heavy movie. What was that experience like, having come off of Secret Life of an American Teenager? That had to be a really different pace for you as an actress.

India Eisley: Yeah? You don't think grabbing a coffee cup and walking out of the kitchen is action heavy? (Laughs) I didn't have near as much training as the others. There really wasn't a lot of preparation involved. It was more of an animalistic vibe from Eve. She doesn't have any control over what she does, especially when it comes to killing people and killing things. There really wasn't a lot of preparation. I met with the stunt team a few times, but I really didn't do as much as I would have liked.

Your are completely believable as Kate Beckinsale's daughter, so I have to wonder...Did they seek you out, or did you actually audition for this movie?

India Eisley: It was really strange how this happened. I auditioned for it. I hadn't heard anything for a few months. Then, we went to this coffee shop on 3rd Street in Santa Monica...We would normally go to this other coffee shop, but I felt like going to this new place. I walked in, and I got in line. I ordered the drinks, and brought them back to the table. My mother says, "You'll never believe who is sitting next to you." It was the daughter of Kate Beckinsale. We were all on tinder hooks from the audition, because we hadn't heard anything. Then Len Wiseman came over, to our table, and he says, "Didn't you audition recently for Underworld Awakening?" I mentioned that yes, I did. He says, "We loved your take. We just saw the tape." I think I was just getting over a cold at the time, and they were too. We talked about suffering through the exact same thing. Then a few weeks went by, and the offer came in. It was kind of strange how it all happened.

Have they discussed with you how involved you're going to be in the upcoming sequels? Are they looking at you to kind of take over the franchise?

India Eisley: Oh, god! (Laughs) The one thing I like about the films as a whole is that this is more of an ensemble thing. Even one and two, though they are predominantly about Kate Beckinsale...There are so many different characters in 1 and 2, so its incredibly balanced. To have a film that is based solely on Eve is something that kind of terrifies me. (Laughs) Not in a bad way. But, because, things are more interesting when there is a bunch of people bouncing off each other. There have been talks. I'm not allowed to say much. I do look forward to working with all of them again.

Where would you like to see your character go in future installments?

India Eisley: Well, I would hope that she is not wearing white Keds and a white cotton outfit for the next few years. That would be a nice change. I would like to wait and see what they come up with. I am interested to see what comes of this. They obviously come up with some great ideas. We'll just have to wait and see.

Kate Beckinsale proved that this is a franchise where actors can come and go throughout various installments. Does that excite you as an actress? That maybe you can sit out a film, but then you can come back for the next one?

India Eisley: Yes. They always find ways to get around things. I think, again, with the flexibility of having a lot of characters, it makes it easier if someone decides they don't want to do much in a particular film. They can find ways to work around it. I am open to anything. I just can't wait to see what comes from everything.

Haywire was released January 20th, 2012 and stars Channing Tatum, Ewan McGregor, Michael Fassbender, Michael Douglas, Antonio Banderas, Bill Paxton, Michael Angarano, Mathieu Kassovitz. The film is directed by Steven Soderbergh.

This is definitely not the case, but Warner Archive is doing its best to fill in the gaps, releasing a slew of previously unreleased titles every week. The 1966 series Tarzan was one such series until recently, when Warner Archive released Tarzan: Season One Part One and Tarzan: Season One Part Two on DVD. The show starred Ron Ely as the title character, a.k.a. Lord Greystoke, and took a much different approach to the jungle dweller, first created by Edgar Rice Burroughs.

I had a chance to speak with the actor over the phone about his role in the series, which ran from 1966 to 1969. Here's what he had to say.

I read that before the series came together, you were set to play a Tarzan impersonator on another show. I was curious how long the gap was between that series that didn't come together and Tarzan?

Ron Ely: Actually, it wasn't a Tarzan impersonator. I don't know where these ideas come from, I've heard it before. They had talked to me about doing the Tarzan movie, a couple of years before. I wasn't interested, my agents weren't interested in my behalf. They said, 'We're going to avoid this, because this will be you forever. This will end your career as an actor.' So we avoided it. Then when the series came together with NBC, it had a different feeling. It was a different entity, so when that came to me, that had more interest. The more I found out about it, and the way they wanted to do it, it became very interesting, and I completely forgot about the business of being stamped with that character, and having that impact on a career. I certainly was not wrong. It did have that impact.

This version seems to be the closest to the book than the previous versions. Was that one of the things that drew you to it, to bring this kind of gravitas to the character?

Ron Ely: I did, absolutely. Everyone involved in it was very serious about doing it, and doing it really well, and doing it with the utmost quality possible. That was everybody, every single person I talked to in advance of doing the show, imparted that to me. They were in it, 100%, to do it the best way they possibly could. It's hard to walk away from something like that.

I also read that you refused to have a stuntman for the fight scenes and the vine-swinging scenes. Were there any really serious injuries that forced the production to shut down at all?

Ron Ely: Well, actually (laughs), there are a bunch of questions in there. The business about me doing all of the stunts on the show, which I did do, was not a key aspect of my doing the character. It evolved. It just happened. As I have said to others, the design of it wasn't ego, it was simply to keep it as seamless as possible, so the audience was never rocked out of that new reality I had, saying, 'Oh, that's not him. There's somebody else doing that.' There were so many things that I was somewhat proficient at doing, that I could do them, maybe better than the average guy, but not at an expert level. I've often said that I'm a good swimmer, but I'm not an Olympic champion swimmer, like Johnny Weissmuller. When people said, 'Well, what were your qualifications for doing it,' I was just a decent athlete, and I was willing. Yeah, I had a high fall. The initial report was that killed me, that I was dead. I went head first into the ground from a very high position, and busted my shoulder, my wrist, and I had a concussion, but it didn't kill me, I'm happy to report.

That's good to hear. This only ran for two seasons, but this was back when seasons ran much longer. I believe the first season was 33 episodes, and the second season was 26 episodes. Can you talk a bit about the production schedule, and how grueling that was? Were you shooting basically the whole year?

Ron Ely: Yeah, Brian, it was a very grueling schedule. The ordinary hour-long show, at that time, shot each episode in six days. The first episode we shot in Brazil, I think it was 32 days. We had been in Brazil for six months, and I think we completed five or six shows, so we had to move. We moved to Mexico, which had a more sophisticated film industry, or, I should say, that was more in sync with the American film industry, at that point. We were able to cut that time down by about half. It took about three years to get all of the shows actually shot and done.

Wow. That's amazing. There were also a number of notable guest stars on the show, like Nichelle Nichols and Russ Tamblyn. I was wondering if you had a favorite guest star who came on and was really memorable for you?

Ron Ely: Well, I did have some because they were close friends of mine, like Jock Mahoney and Woody Strode. I would always look forward to any kind of a part that they could do, because I always wanted them there. They were great supporters. In terms of the people I didn't know who came on to work the show, there were some like Ethel Merman that were really a hoot. They were really fun and glorious people to know and to spend time with. People Neville Brand, people who had these strong characters that they had done for years. They bring a persona with them, and they don't bend from that persona much to facilitate a character. Their persona is bigger than the character they're going to play, and they use it. I enjoyed that. That was great fun. It livened up things for me, every time a new guest star would come in like Julie Harris or Maurice Evans, a New York stage actor. You couldn't imagine a setting more out of place for Maurice Evans. He was perfect, and he enjoyed it. He talked to me a lot about doing Tarzan on the stage. He could see that as viable, and something that would be attractive. As I look at it now, I'd like to see that done. I'd like to see someone do that, because it could work.

I read that you're actually writing crime novels now. Do you have any coming up, or are you setting any of these up for movie or TV adaptations?

Ron Ely: Not at this time. I have other books to publish, but I'm sort of in a holding pattern now, trying to get my son finished with college and done with that. Then I'll devote more time to myself and my various careers. Right now, I'm just slowly coming to the end of a long period of colleges and school sports, when I really stepped out of the business just to be with my family. I've been away from the film business for an extended period of time, and in that period of time, I started writing.

To wrap up, what would you like to say to anyone who is curious about the show, who have never seen it before, about why they should pick up this great new DVD set from Warner Archive?

Ron Ely: I would simply say that again, 'great' and 'new.' For years, people have been after me, contacting me... first it was the VHS copies of the Tarzan show, and then the DVD. Now, after all this time, Warner Archive has remastered the entire series in HD, and it is brilliant. It is really sharp, and it is really nice to say. If you've ever had an inclination to own the show, go get it, because it's sitting right there, and it's beautiful.

Don't take this the wrong way, but I didn't know how funny you were before I saw this. I thought you were hilarious as Nixer.

John Hawkes: Oh, thank you very much. I was really proud of it. I moved out here, after doing plays and being a part of a theater company in Texas. It was one of the few times, after moving out here, that I could make a whole character happen, on camera, that was satisfying for me as a viewer. That was very gratifying. I did a lot of oddball, sidekick work early on, and I never really found those roles very interesting, but that was one of the few that was right on. I felt that Robert afforded us, all of us as actors, room to create characters that were interesting and very well-rounded.

That's one of the things I liked about it. Nixer definitely is a sidekick, but he has a lot more going on than your regular sidekick. Was that more of a draw for you, or was it just working with Robert, who was just coming off El Mariachi?

John Hawkes: You know, I was really excited to work with Robert. I had just seen El Mariachi, and I was just excited when I read the script. To be honest, in 1994, I was doing a lot of jobs, as an actor, that I wasn't very interested in, because I just enjoyed acting. I was doing just about anything, but a job like this, I was really really excited and hopeful to be cast. It was a really rewarding experience, all the way through.

We mostly only see Nixer when he's hanging out with Dude. Did you ever develop any kind of back story, about maybe his home life, just to get into the character more?

John Hawkes: I'm certain that I did that. I'm an over-preparer to this day, but back then, if I had a one-line role in a sitcom, there would be pages that I would write up about the character (Laughs). I'm sure I had a lot about Nixer. I just wish I could recall what it was. I was trying to dig around and find the notebooks last night, and even the script. I keep very few scripts over the years, but I know I kept that one, because it was a highlight. I'm not sure exactly what Nixer's back story was, but I can assure you that there was a pretty thorough one that I had come up with. I don't think that Robert was that insistent on his actors doing anything like that. I was just enjoying it as an exercise and to figure things out about the character.

I just talked to William Sadler, and he described Robert as being this kid with the biggest toy set one could possibly imagine. Would you say that was true, in your experience working with him?

John Hawkes: I think so. I know that Robert was kind of frustrated, because even though it was a small project by Hollywood standards, I think he felt like it was over-crewed, that there were just way too many people around. He felt they could have done it with less people, and they could have saved the money to shoot other things. He was never rude to people at all, but he was very much a do-it-yourself guy. About a couple days into the shoot, he was pretty much shooting it himself, at that point. It probably wouldn't have been a fun thing to be the director of photography on Robert's early projects, because he just knew what he wanted. I don't think that's an egomaniacal thing, he's just a storyteller. He described in Rebel Without a Crew, how he can close his eyes and think of a movie from the very first moment from the very last roll of the credits, before he even begins to shoot. It was an unusual experience for all of us, and I've never had one quite like it, but it was terrific. It was really exciting. That being said, you work with someone like Steven Soderbergh, and, to this day, he shoots his own movie, as well as directs, and he finds that to be an effective approach. Again, I don't think it has anything to do with ego, and much more to do with making the movie you want to make.

It was cool to watch these performances from David (Arquette), Salma (Hayek) and William Sadler. Could you get a sense of the greatness that was to come from all of these actors?

John Hawkes: I think so. I mean, David had already done a fair amount of work. Jason Wiles, who plays Teddy, literally while we were in pre-production, was cast in John Singleton's Higher Learning, and had a great role. Salma, it was her first American role, but you could tell that she was beyond just a beauty. She had a lot of gut and soul. Sadler I really liked, at that point, because he was so funny in Bill and Ted's Bogus Journey. My friend Alex Winter played Bill, and I knew Sadler's work that way, so I was really excited to meet him. The one thing that happened, and Sadler might have already talked about this, but the Northridge earthquake happened right in the middle of the shoot. Right in the middle, maybe day 3 or day 4. This was pre-cell phone, so I think I drove all the way out to the set to find out if we were working that day. There was a huge earthquake, and we didn't know if we were going to shoot or not, but we ended up taking the day off, and shooting the next day. That day was the amazing roller skating scene, and I remember everyone was on roller skates and the after shocks were hitting. For the next two or three months, in Los Angeles, everyone was just saying, 'Did you feel that?' People were feeling their own earthquakes and aftershocks. It was crazy. I remember going to Portland to shoot a pilot, a month and a half or two months later, and thinking that Portland was shaking. It was a really odd thing.

That gives a lot more context to that roller skating scene then.

John Hawkes: Yeah, and it was such a brilliantly-shot scene. I remember Robert was on a wheelchair, and putting a camera on a skate, literally, and pushing it around with a pole. He was very inventive and it was guerilla filmmaking at its finest.

We ran a story awhile back that you were in talks to play The Governor in The Walking Dead. Is there anything you can say about that?

John Hawkes: They offered me the role, and I just felt there would be someone else who could do it better. I was flattered, and I took a look at the series. It held interest for me, but I just didn't feel like I was the guy for it. I have to be careful of what TV shows I choose, particularly ones that have commercials in them, because it's going to be a different kind of television show. There are going to be sponsors. No matter how good the show is, if there are commercials, it's going to be a different show, to me. That's just my personal feeling. Yeah, it was nice of them to ask, and it's a good show, but, again, I just didn't feel I was the guy. They came to me and sent me the graphic novel and the first two seasons. I took a look at them, and just didn't feel like it was for me.

Is there anything you can say about Switch? I'm a huge fan of Elmore Leonard, and Jackie Brown as well.

John Hawkes: I think the only Tarantino movie I haven't seen is Jackie Brown, and I won't watch it until after I shoot this. I don't think we're supposed to be imitators of Samuel L. Jackson and Robert De Niro, although I think that's what some people expect. Again, I will not have even seen Jackie Brown at that point, and my De Niro impression isn't that great, so I'm just going to approach it like any other film. (Writer-director) Daniel Schechter adapted the novel, I think, really beautifully, and this has kind of been a long time coming. I met with him many months ago, and Yasiin Bey, who I worked with many years before very briefly, I think he's a terrific guy and actor. I'm looking forward to getting going on it. It's been slow moving, trying to get the money and schedules all set up, but the script is what called to me, and that's always how it is. The script is good, and the role is good, and Daniel seems like a capable storyteller. I'm excited to work on it.

When do you start shooting?

John Hawkes: No idea. Hopefully this summer.

Excellent. I'll definitely keep my eyes peeled for that.

John Hawkes: Yeah, man. I hope it's good. Again, it starts with the script, and it's a fine script, for sure. I know that Elmore Leonard was impressed enough to want to be a part of the project. I just know that he's blessed the project, and that's exciting. He's such a terrific writer.

Oh yes. I'm not quite there yet, as far as reading his whole collection, but I've amassed quite a big stack of Elmore Leonard novels.

John Hawkes: Well, that's a life's work right there, my friend. That's a lot to read, that's good. I'm glad you're working your way through. I haven't read enough of his books myself, but I have always enjoyed them.

Just to wrap up, Roadracers is definitely Robert's most obscure title in his collection. What would you like to say to fans of his, who might not be familiar with this, about why they should pick it up on Blu-ray?

John Hawkes: Well, I just think it's a terrific little movie, and I think you'll see Robert's work in its infancy, those kind of action sequences, which he already proved he could do in El Mariachi on a shoestring budget. He had a little more to work with on this one, it's very inventive, it's very fun, it's got attitude, for sure, and I think people will get a real kick out of it. It's interesting to look at Salma Hayek's first English-speaking film, and see David Arquette do an amazing job, as well as Sadler, and just a great cast all around.

Excellent. I really loved this.

John Hawkes: Oh, cool man. I can't wait. I haven't seen it in several years, so I can't wait to see it again.

One of the highlights of this incredible action tale is star/thrill-seeker Tom Cruise actually climbing on the tallest building in the world, the Burj Khalifa in Dubai, India. The filmmaker revealed they had originally wanted to achieve these breathtaking shots by using CGI, but his star insisted on getting it in camera.

The filmmaker also talked about Tom Cruise as a producer, how he approaches the franchise much differently than any other series, and how he wanted to make it more realistic by having the gadgets fail the agents.

Brad Bird also talked about Tom Cruise doing all of his own stunts, and the actor's incredible work ethic.

This came out the same year as The Shawshank Redemption, so I was curious if you shot Roadracers before that?

William Sadler: If I'm not mistaken, I think I shot this before I shot Shawshank. I'm not certain about that, to be honest with you. I know they happened in the same year. Shawshank was in the summer, in Ohio. We spent the entire summer there, 11 or 12 weeks or something like that. Maybe it happened right after Shawshank.

It must have been interesting to have these two roles go right up against each other, the prisoner and the cop. There's an interesting duality there.

William Sadler: Well, I'm always on one side of law enforcement or the other, aren't I?

That's true. What I enjoyed about this it's like this 1950s version of The Dukes of Hazzard, almost. What kind of vibe did you get when you first read the script by Robert (Rodriguez) and (co-writer) Tommy (Nix)?

William Sadler: You know, I loved the style he had. It had this sort of gritty style, that you don't see all the time, and I also liked the humor that he brought to it. There were bits that were funny that were designed to be funny. I only knew Robert from El Mariachi, which I had just seen, and he had called and asked me to do it. I was excited to meet him, this wunderkind. He really was. Everybody in Hollywood was talking about him. Everybody. He was this extraordinarily gifted director, who made a movie for like 20 bucks, selling his blood or something to get enough money to make a movie, and the movie turned out great. It was classy, and it was funny as hell. He was really the big draw for me. I liked the script, and I liked the role, and I liked what it was funny about it, but Robert was the reason I wanted to do the film.

I loved the first scene with Sarge, the whole pigs in the blanket introduction. It almost sets him up as this softy, but we learn that he's very much the opposite. Was it tricky to find that balance as this guy who just wants to clean up his town, and this guy who will stop at nothing to get Dude?

William Sadler: Well, it's not hard to get those two flavors in the same ice cream cone. That's like the Nazi who is into his puppies, and then turns around and kills people. People are complex that way, people are that way. He has this soft spot, he can wax poetical about pigs in a blanket, and then turn around and be a motherf*&%er. It's all about mother, and apple pie, and home, pride and country, but don't cross him, man.

They hinted at the history between Sarge and Dude's father. It isn't quite explored fully in the movie though, but was that something that you and Robert developed, just so you could have that history of the character?

William Sadler: Yeah, exactly. Sometimes that stuff is enough that we're on the same page. You can hint at it without going into great detail.

I loved how they kept focusing on that, 'This is God's Country' sign, and so many bad things keep happening right around that sign.

William Sadler: That's the thing. That's his sense of humor. He's always looking for the ironic twist, the unexpected, ironic, funny, and he seasons his movies with that. He makes them incredibly indelible.

This has some early performances from David Arquette, Salma Hayek, and John Hawkes. Can you talk about the dynamic on the set of being around a really up and coming cast?

William Sadler: You could tell that these were classy folks.

John Hawkes and Salma were amazing. Hawkes was hysterical in this. He was so fun to watch. You know, throwing the knife and sticking in the shoe, that whole sequence. You expect great things from people who are that good. Everybody was just starting out.

Can you give us a sense of how Robert works on the set? What really impressed you about working with him?

William Sadler: There was a great sense of playfulness, that I loved about working with Robert. You often hear this about directors, how it's like having the best set of toys. This fabulous train set, the biggest box of toys that a kid could possibly have. The best directors look like a kid having more fun than you're supposed to have. He was like running from one camera to another. It was his first film after El Mariachi, in which he did everything. He held the camera, he held the microphone, he did the editing, he did everything. Here, suddenly, he had the box of toys. There's a learning curve, and he was like, 'What do you do with this? Oh my God, look at this.' He really did look like a kid on Christmas Day, running around the set, with these huge 35 millimeter film cameras and cranes and special effects and a budget for costumes. It was the best train set a kid could possibly get.

We heard recently there was a script completed for Bill & Ted 3. I was wondering if you have heard anything about The Grim Reaper possibly returning in that sequel?

William Sadler: I'm not sure if it's a done deal yet. I know they're trying to write The Grim Reaper in. (Writer-star) Alex (Winter) said, 'How could we do this without the Reaper?' I'm hopeful. I'd love to go back and play with those guys again. That was one of the most fun roles I've done. I'll be there in a heartbeat, if they want to do it.

What would you like to say to any fans of Robert who might not be familiar with Roadracers, about why they should pick it up on Blu-ray?

William Sadler: Oh, they should absolutely check out the early work of one of our best directors. You have to look at where these people come from, who have gone on to impress you so much with bigger films. All the raw ingredients of greatness are there.

Synopsis

Liam Neeson stars as John Ottway, a sharpshooting wolf hunter who becomes an unlikely hero, leading a group of oilrig roughnecks on a death-defying backwoods trek through the Alaskan wilderness. When a plane transporting them to Anchorage crashes on a remote mountaintop, eight survivors must find their way back to civilization or perish in a frozen wasteland. With Ottway as their guide, the ravaged group faces hostile terrain with limited supplies. Most terrifyingly, they are stalked by a pack of fierce and cunning wolves. In order to survive, they will have to turn the tables on the ferocious predators in an unparalleled wilderness adventure.
