Cartoon Network announced today the first - and second - Blu-ray release for its hit comedy series, Adventure Time, as the company will bring the first two seasons of the Emmy Award-nominated animated series to Blu-ray on June 4. Manborg is blazing a trail across the Internet as it makes its theatrical, VOD, and DVD debut this week. Already an instant cult classic, we caught up with director Steven Kostanski to talk about the making of this Canadian sci-fi thriller that has wowed action fans across the globe. Here is our conversation about this awesome throwback to 80s VHS class warfare and a true throwforward to the future of digital independent cinema.

Can you give me some of the history on Manborg? What did it take to get this movie made?

Steven Kostanski: Obviously, a lot of it was done on the cheap. I used a lot of lights and camera equipment that I got from my old high school. The green screen we shot on in my parents' garage was sewn together by my mom. So, I had a lot of people pitching in for free. The movie ultimately cost $1000 to make. All of the costumes and stuff were made out of garbage that I dumpster dived for. And bits of junk that I had. I did pretty much everything myself. All of the animation, the costumes, and the prop. Any kind of effects. It was done on my own time.

How old are you, if you don't mind me asking?

Steven Kostanski: Right now, I am twenty-six. But when I started this...I think I was twenty-three...Or twenty-two...Technically, when I started writing it. I guess. It was a three-year process in getting it made. I filmed for about a year, and then it was two years of postproduction.

What compels a twenty-three year old to go back to high school and get film equipment. Did you steal it? Did you borrow it?

Steven Kostanski: Oh, no...I just borrowed it. I am good friends with my old film teacher. They weren't using it that much, so I borrowed it in-between projects. My old high school didn't even have a film program. But then me and a couple of other students started to make movies, and we actually put some effort into it. They got all of this equipment. And my old teacher was more than happy to let me take a camera for a weekend. I was working around their schedule. They didn't just give me the stuff for months on end. But yeah, that definitely helped.

I don't think I've heard of another filmmaker, whose movie has gotten this kind of attention, that filmed it from equipment borrowed from their old high school. Your story will be inspiring to others.

Steven Kostanski: Yeah, well, I don't know...I'm pretty good friends with my old high school teacher. And I was one of the only people to make a movie at the school. I think he just wanted me to produce stuff.

The other reason I ask you about your age is because this reminds me of something I might have seen on USA's Nigh Flight back in 1986. How did you become aware of the movies that you pay homage to in Manborg? Who helped you find those movies?

Steven Kostanski: When I was a kid, it wasn't the tail end of the VHS days. It was the early 90s. So, I spent a lot of time at the video store. I lived in the horror and sci fi sections. Anything that was there, I would rent. I ended up renting a lot of schlocky stuff. I ended up renting a lot of Full Moon productions and Troma movies. I'm a big fan of Arena. The movie Eliminators was a big inspiration for this movie. And the TV series Captain Power and the Soldiers of the Future. I don't know if you've seen that. But it was on when I was a kid, and it was a big influence for me. It was very low budget, but it had a very grand scale to it. That's what I was trying to accomplish with Manborg.

The movie has a lot of humor. You obviously weren't taking the genre too seriously. Back in the day, when those cheap, crazy 80s movies were being made, they were doing it with a straight face...

Steven Kostanski: With my stuff, I always approach the work seriously. It's a lot of work to make a movie. You can't have a bunch of people joking around, you'll wind up with a bad product. You have to take the process seriously. There was a lot of joking around and making fun of stuff on set, and riffing on things. The actors definitely contributed to that too. They are good at improvising, so they were making up a lot of stuff while we were shooting. A lot of the best stuff in the movie is us laughing at the material itself.

Manborg Exclusive: Hold the Line

What about the screenplay writing process. Did you find humor during that stage of production, or did most of the humor come out of being on set?

Steven Kostanski: With the screenplay, I kind of approached it, for the most part, kind of serious. But serious in the way you talk about those old movies. Those movies were probably something they took very seriously. But the movie itself has a lot of flaws to it. The humor wasn't on the surface. I wrote a pretty straightforward movie. The humor came out of us acting it out, and how absurd it was. Then we added to that. This was supposed to be me watching one of these movies, and making fun of it as I'm watching it. That's what the final product becomes.

What about your cast? Were these friends of yours? Did you hold a casting call? Did you go to the high school and recruit drama majors?

Steven Kostanski: Um...Well, I'm part of the film collection called Atsron-6, which also made the Troma movie Father's Day. We all work together to make our movies. Also, they were the main actors. Like Matthew Kennedy, who plays Manborg, he is an Atron-6 member. And an actor. I cast him because he was available and willing, and a good fit for the role. Adam Brooks and Conor Sweeney are also in the movie, and they are Astron-6 members. Jeremy Gillespie does our title cards, and he plays the Baron. That was the majority of the casting.

How did you get involved in this collective?

Steven Kostanski: We are all from Winnipeg, Manitoba. We all used to make movies on our own. Then, we would compete in this one short film festival that would happen annually around Halloween in Winnipeg. That is how we all met. We'd see each other's movies, and we thought we were all good. So we decided to team up and make movies together. That's how we started.

Canadian movies are always so charming. Everytime I see one, there just seems to be something a little off, a little different, and a little special about it. Why do you think Canadian movies are so slightly odd, and yet so fascinating?

Steven Kostanski: I don't know. I can speak on behalf of Astron-6, and say that we really pour our hearts into our movies. I think a lot of our personalities shine through. That's what I find charming about them. I find the stuff we've made entertaining, because when I watch it, I feel like its me hanging out with my friends. It's like joking around. Laughing at these movies. It feels relatable. We put an effort into making characters that are entertaining, and charming. We try to put some actual heart into the movies, instead of them being all spectacle.

When it comes to Canadian movies, there's not too many cooks in the kitchen, so to speak...

Steven Kostanski: Yes. That's what Manborg was. There was no intentions of having it released on DVD. It just sort of happened. It was playing festivals, and now it's coming out. I made it only because I wanted to make a sci-fi movie for myself. I'd always wanted to do it. And I love doing special effects. I love making creature masks and things. Choreographing action scenes, and doing stuff like that. I just wanted to combine all of those things into one experience. That's how the movie came about. You have to go into the world of low budget filmmaking to get that personal element to it. As opposed to it being very producer driven.

The poster is awesome. It really reaches out and grabs you, and we don't get to see this kind of poster art anymore. How did you get such a great looking poster for the movie?

Steven Kostanski: The guy we hired, Jason Edmiston, he is a very genre based artist. All of his work is influenced by his childhood favorites, like G.I. Joe and stuff like that. You have to go to his website and check it out. You'll see a bunch of his work. Once he watched Manborg, he was all over it. He just ran with it. He came up with the poster design and everything. So, we gave him reference pictures, and he went ahead and did it. He did an amazing job. That's the best part of these 80s movies. They have these wicked posters and these wicked VHS covers. I wanted to capture that for Manborg especially.

You truly did. Now, is there going to be a Manborg 2? Or have you not thought that far ahead yet?

Steven Kostanski: (Laughs) This one took so long to make, its not something I want to do in the immediate future. But I would do it if someone gave me more than $1000 to make it. I would definitely make a second one.

Its crazy that you made it for $1000. I'm sure you've seen that the movie is blowing up all across the internet.

Steven Kostanski: Its ridiculous. If you told me three years ago that this was going to happen, I wouldn't have believed you. But, yeah, I guess its good. People seem to be latching onto it. They are finding something entertaining about it. It reminds me of when I would go and rent movies, and I would analyze them. These crappy 80s sci-fi movies. Hopefully I bring some of that vibe back to people. It seems to be missing from today's movies.

Are you currently working on a movie? Or do you have a day job?

Steven Kostanski: I'm working in effects. I'm working on this show called Saving Hope for MindWarp productions. It's a hospital drama. I can't go into any details about what I'm making. But I do work in special effects. That is my day job. (Laughs)

Are you going to make another movie soon?

Steven Kostanski: I'm working on it. I have a few things that are in the works. I can't reveal what. If you saw that trailer for Bio-Cop after the movie, it might possibly be that. We'll see!

The 74-year-old actor stands just as tall today, commanding audiences with his tales of those golden days of pulp fiction on film. Warner Archive Collection has brought Ron Ely's best-loved roles back into the spotlight, making the classic titles available on DVD and through its new live-streaming service, Warner Archive Instant (clickHere).

Premiering on NBC in 1966, Edgar Rice Burroughs' immortal creation, Tarzan, took to the nation's TV screens for the first time. Still in the capable hands of producer Sy Weintraub, the TV Tarzan (the aforementioned Mr. Ron Ely) continued the more recent (and more authentic) interpretation of Lord Greystoke as a sophisticated, articulate jungle adventurer as seen in the Tarzan films. Also carried over from the big screen was young actor Manuel Padilla Jr. now playing the jungle lord's kid sidekick alongside Cheetah, the simian one.

Based on the first of Kenneth Robeson's 181 adventure packed books, Doc Savage: The Man of Bronze hit the screen with all its gee-whiz, gung-ho spirit intact. And its bold protagonist, who along with having a herculean body is also a surgeon, linguist and inventor, remains determined to do right to all and wrong to no one. Ron Ely plays the strapping Savage in this high-camp, big-heroics tale of his trek into the Valley of the Vanished to confront the power-hungry Captain Seas.

Once reluctant to embrace his cult hero status, Ron Ely has joined Warner Archive Collection at two major events over the past six months - at the Paley Center for Media in Los Angeles, and WonderCon in Anaheim - to celebrate those cherished productions of 40-plus years ago. He took some time in conjunction to answer a few questions. Heed the words of Tarzan!

What are your impressions of pulp heroes?

Ron Ely: When I was a kid, we had radio, we had Saturday morning serials, and we had comic books. It wasn't like today - we had a limited array of things, but those things especially appealed to kids. I loved comic books, and I read a lot of them. Archie, Superman, Captain Marvel - those types. Part and parcel of being a kid back then was to latch onto larger than life heroes. It wasn't until we became adults that our hero image became more adult and humanized with flaws. Back then, they had no flaws - our heroes were the biggest, the baddest, and the most honorable. All those principles set in motion everything that followed suit for me. Doc Savage was one of the most successful series of books - the character was one of the triumvirate of great action heroes, along with Tarzan and Superman. Those three really set the standard for pulp heroes. It's interesting that Warner Archive has all three of them - they're like a superhero factory. I can't think of anybody that can compare.

As a kid, who were your heroes?

Ron Ely: I grew up in Amarillo, Texas, so my heroes were cut from the same cloth that I saw all around me. Cowboys like John Wayne and Robert Mitchum. One of the joys of getting into this business was that I actually got to know some of my heroes. Those western, heroic characters occupied my interests in film more than any others. I loved the comic book and pulp heroes, but for me, you couldn't beat John Wayne.

What does it mean to you to be a hero?

Ron Ely: It's sort of a funny thing being called a hero, because it's not something I wanted to do. But it just kept coming for me. I don't really understand why, but I appreciate it because I think it might have grown out of my sticking to the solid, basic principles I learned growing up. Those important characteristics tend to exist more in the superhero characters than other flawed adult characters. I always enjoyed playing the flawless characters because, whereas some folks find them corny, I appreciate the morals, the lessons, and all those things that superheroes are designed to be and represent.

What has prompted you to come out of your shell a bit and embrace the fans and the fan conventions?

Ron Ely: I used to hate being around the fans - I avoided it like the plague. I enjoyed the anonymity. That's why I pretty well dropped off the face of the Earth for quite a long time. But getting back out into the public again has been one of the most rewarding experiences that I can imagine. Those fans are diehard. They hang on, they don't let go. They believe in Doc and Tarzan - they believe in them in a way that makes you want to know more about them. It was surprising to me to find out the fans are still there, to discover the fan base is so enormous. It surprised to see younger people in that mix who weren't around when I made Tarzan. It's a kick for me. I enjoy seeing those people and hearing what they have to say. They embrace these characters for the right reasons. It's not a character like in Die Hard - characters like Doc Savage, Tarzan and Superman are more pure superheroes. There's a special group of characters, and a special group of people that remain true to those characters as fans.

When the robbery of a quaint diner goes sour, viewers are taken on an intense and twisty thrill ride in the indie Pawn, currently available on Blu-ray and DVD, which features an all-star cast including Ray Liotta, Forest Whitaker, Michael Chiklis, Jessica Szohr, Stephen Lang, and Nikki Reed. At the heart of this story is Nick, portrayed convincingly by Sean Faris, a young man just released from prison, who is in the wrong place at the wrong time as the robbery unfolds. I recently had the chance to speak with this talented actor over the phone, to discuss his role in director David A. Armstrong's thriller. Here's what he had to say.

I'm a big Pawn Stars fan, and, for whatever reason, when I first heard of this project years ago, something involving a pawn shop popped into my head. Did you have any sort of reaction like that when you picked up a script called Pawn?

Sean Faris: Oh, no no no. I had a brief synopsis as it was sent over from my agency (Laughs). I had a good idea of what I was getting into, and the excellent cast that was behind it. I was already kind of sold on it, before I even cracked it, but once I cracked it open, and got about 15 pages into it, I knew, especially with the cast, and how twisty the story was turning, I was hooked and ready to go.

It really kept my interest throughout the whole film, just because of the nature of the narrative. You think everyone is a suspect, at some point.

Sean Faris: Right, exactly. It's like everybody, including the bad guys, are all pawns in this big game of chess being played between the cops and the mob, right?

Yeah, absolutely. Was there anything specific you did to get into the mindset of playing Nick? He's an ex-con, he's trying to get his life back together, and he gets sucked into this insane situation. Were there certain things you pulled from?

Sean Faris: You know, you can paint him as an ex-con, but I just feel he's a petty criminal. He was just trying to make ends meet, and he was doing it in a selfish way, without taking into consideration his wife and the people around him. He went to jail for it, but while he was in jail, all he was doing was contemplating the fact that now his wife is pregnant, he's in jail, and he's going to be a father. I think that was a major, major wake-up call for him. He doesn't want anything to do with the criminal life. He wasn't a career criminal, he was just young and stupid and trying to make some quick, easy money. I think going through that, made him a man, because, coming out, all he wants to do is take care of his family, and be there for his family. I didn't really have to carry the criminal aspect with me. I was able to leave that behind, because he was coming out a new person. He had already gone through his hard time, and he's a person who is very focused on taking care of his family, his goals of being a good father, and being there for them, and then he's thrown into a situation, unwillingly, where he's fighting not only for his own life, but for his family's life and for the life of people he grew up with, who are stuck in this situation with him. It's such an emotional roller coaster he goes through, and that was very much a major draw for me to the character, to be able to play those aspects and enter into the mindset of what someone like that might be experiencing. I really looked at my own life, when someone really close to me passed away. One of my best friends' father passed away, and his dad was very close to me in my life. When I was out here in Los Angeles, I would call him and talk to him about things that were going on. I was really attaching myself to those emotions, and letting them play out in this other atmosphere, this diner. It's like, when Stephen Lang's character gets killed, that's someone who Nick knew all of his life, going to the diner. There was a little bit of a re-attachment going on there for me, for those emotions. You also let them play out in the scenario that you're in, and see how you react to what's going on around you. That's pretty much what I did.

This must have been an actor's dream, to get to work with guys like Forest Whitaker and Michael Chiklis. I was really impressed with Chiklis' British accent, to be honest. I was not expecting him to be playing a British guy.

Sean Faris: You know what was really surprising? There were many days on set where he would walk around on set like normal, but there were some days where he walked around and did the British accent all day. When the cameras are rolling and they call action, he just pops right into it, no problem. I thought he did a great job with it. I particularly liked the scene between him and Max Beesley, because Max is English. It was a profile shot with them going back and forth, and I thought they matched up so well together in that. You really bought into Chiklis being a Brit.

I agree. I was a huge fan of The Shield, so anything he's in, I'm usually interested in.

Sean Faris: Oh, come on, man. Who, that loves TV, isn't a huge f---ing fan of The Shield? Are you kidding me? There's a reason for it. It was f---ing great television.

Yes, it was. I believe you shot this both in Connecticut and L.A. as well.

Sean Faris: Well, we shot most of it in Connecticut. We did a couple of re-shoots in Los Angeles, yeah.

They say it once, briefly in the film, that it's set in Connecticut, but you don't exactly get that sense of place, although I didn't think that was very important.

Sean Faris: Right. Well, because you don't get too many exterior shots. Almost everything takes place inside the diner, about 90% of the film. Then, anything that was shot outside the diner, was shot in L.A. (Laughs). Except for the S.W.A.T. scene and all that stuff, the rest was shot in Connecticut.

Connecticut is not normally a place many productions go to. How did that community respond to a production like this, especially with so many big names attached to it?

Sean Faris: Oh, man, they loved it. They were a very, very welcoming community. In fact, the S.W.A.T. team that you see outside, that's not just a bunch of extras, that's the local S.W.A.T. team. We had the real-deal guys. Those were a few interesting days on set. The community was very happy to have us there, and they let us get away with a little bit. We weren't able to do any live firing, though. The gunshots and all that was all done in special effects. We were shooting all night long out there. We'd be out there until 7 o'clock in the morning, shooting away. The community would come out and line up outside and watch us shoot, especially the exteriors. It was really cool. It was nice to be somewhere that hasn't really had a film community come through it. Everybody was more fascinated and into it. If you go to a community that's been shot in several times before, by the time you get there, they're usually pretty jaded. They'll drive by and make noises and honk the horn and blow your takes, because now you're creating traffic in their community, and they don't like it (Laughs). It was nice to be welcomed.

David A. Armstrong, the director, I believe this was his first feature, after a slew of credits in different departments. I was really impressed with how this whole thing came together, in both the direction and the script (written by Jay Anthony White), because it's really complex and it would be really easy to get lost in all these twists and turns. What are your thoughts on how he handled the story, and his style on the set?

Sean Faris: I'm still amazed that it didn't get too confusing. We shot a non-linear script, so the script itself is out of order and all over the place. Then, we're on the set shooting, and you never shoot things in order, and even if we shot in order, it would still be non-linear, because the script is non-linear. So, keeping it together, and focusing on where we were coming from and where we were going, as a set, as a movie, as a cast, was quite the job to handle. I felt like David handled himself very well and was very patient, very calm. He kept it together pretty well. Also, Chiklis is really good at that kind of stuff as well, and he's also a producer on the project. He would be there for us if we had questions like, 'Wait, what is going on? What just happened before this?' That would happen so many times on set, with any given actor. I think even Chiklis at times would be like, 'Where am I at? Where am I at?' It was more of a group effort, but I think David handled himself really well. I mean, 15 days, that's a task for any director. That's a major task to take on, and my hat goes off to him.

Is there anything that you're currently working on that you can talk about?

Sean Faris: I'm currently working on Pretty Little Liars, playing Detective Holbrook. The season premiere will be June 11th, and my character will be introduced onto the show then. It's a great set. The girls are all awesome, everybody, the cast, the creators, I. Marlene King, Oliver Goldstick, my hat goes off to them. They're awesome. I really enjoy being on that set. I currently have a film I shot in Hong Kong doing the film festival circuit. Then we'll see what comes up next.

Are you going to be a regular on Pretty Little Liars this season?

Sean Faris: I'm recurring, so it all depends with where they want to go with the story line. Roma Maffia, from Nip/Tuck, she's playing my partner, and she's awesome. We have a good time on the set together. There's a nice timing between the two of us. She's the older veteran and I'm the young detective who's a little brash. It's cool. It's fun.

I believe you're also venturing into producing.

Sean Faris: Yeah, I've produced a couple of shorts, and I've been credited as a producer on an indie feature. Producing is something I definitely want to get into. There are a few ideas that I'd really like to write, but I'm not a writer. I'm actually in search of a writer for an idea that I have, that I think is gold. It would be like a Showtime, HBO, a cable show. Network television wouldn't be able to get away with the content that I want to put into it, but yeah, I definitely want to get into producing, and maybe direct a short or two as well. I might need to take one of them and direct it as a teaser, which would be my first. There are many avenues to travel.

What would you like to say to anyone who is curious about Pawn, about why they should pick it up on Blu-ray and DVD?

Sean Faris: It's a tense drama that's set in a diner, and anyone can be guilty of anything, or innocent, whether you're a cop or a patron or a hostage. It's told from many different perspectives, and it's going to keep you guessing until the end, so check it out.

On Blu-ray and DVD today after a limited theatrical run, Thale follows two crime scene cleaners who discover a beautiful, tailed female creature known as a huldra locked away in a cellar. She never utters a word, unable to tell her story, but the pieces of the puzzle soon come together: She's been held captive for decades for reasons soon to surface.

We recently caught up with writer/director Aleksander Nordaas to chat about this thriller based on ancient Norwegian folklore. And it only added to the excitement that he called us from the land of Thale itself. Here is our conversation.

How's the weather up there in Norway this afternoon?

Aleksander Nordaas: I actually don't want to talk about the weather. (Laughs) There is a lot of snow.

The artwork for Thale has been amazing. It really reaches out and grabs you, and, seriously, I didn't even need a trailer to know this is something I wanted to see...

Aleksander Nordaas: We started out with the poster that just had the cow's tail on it. I made that myself on the computer to start pumping stuff out while we were making the film. So, I made some of the posters myself, and then we had posters come from the distributors. They made the other posters. But I guess the tail, art wise, is something we haven't seen much of. I think it worked for us. What is your opinion? It caught your eye?

Yes, definitely. I saw some of the images, and I immediately went searching for more about the movie. The art speaks to what the movie is extremely well.

Aleksander Nordaas: Great!

The creature in the movie is very close to what we see in Norwegian folklore. What were the challenges of casting Thale? And finding an actress who looked so much like the huldra?

Aleksander Nordaas: I knew Silje Reinåmo, who is playing Thale. In 2008, we made our first film together, that was the first time I worked with her professionally. Going into the writing of Thale, I wrote the character for her. She was on board from the beginning, because I knew this was going to be a really challenging part. I needed an actress who would just go with it, and put all of herself into the character. I knew that Silje Reinåmo could do that. She has the physicality to do that, as well. So it made it a little less challenging.

How does that change the writing process, when you know a specific actor is going to play a specific character?

Aleksander Nordaas: It was really helpful. She was beside me while I was writing. I could see what worked, and what didn't. I could go through the story with her shot by shot. We could find a way to approach it.

How did knowing that you had little to no budget affect the way you wrote a screenplay?

Aleksander Nordaas: We knew we had to structure the film to the locations that we had available. We wrote it backwards. We put the action in where we could shoot that. We had to figure out how it fit into the story, and at which locations that it was physically appealing. Of course, being the director and screenwriter myself, I could pretend along at the locations before we went there and started shooting. That was one of the advantages of being so low budget. We didn't have the pressure of a time schedule on our hands. So I could schedule time to make it as visual and as weird as I wanted to. Once we figured that out, we could just go and shoot.

Why do you think these movies about Norwegian folklore have never been made before?

Aleksander Nordaas: That's a really good question. Because I always asked myself that as a young director in Norway. Why aren't more Norwegian filmmakers making these kinds of films? I would have watched them. Ironically, traditionally, in Norway, we had until recently a state funded system. This state funded system, until the last ten or so years, has been triumphing films that are only based in reality or drama. Luckily, in the last ten years, filmmakers have become more aware of the folklore. It is so much a part of our culture. This is something we want to bring out to the world now, and we think people are ready for it. I think for a while the Norwegians were avoiding it. But the state funded system was different than it is now.

This folklore has remained consistent in the culture though, right? Or has it faded amongst the younger people of the country?

Aleksander Nordaas: Its weird. Norwegians are very fond of their Trolls. Trolls are seen in other cultures. But there are a lot of other creatures that are kind of fading away. I have always known about the other creatures. But I realize now that the kids growing up don't know about some of these things. The kids in high school. I'm only 30 years old, but they are gradually disappearing. But now they are starting to reemerge in certain films. Younger kids today, luckily, are now learning more about it.

Aleksander Nordaas: I hope it's a little bit of both. There is a lot more to grab a hold of in the Norwegian culture. Also, I went to do other types of films.
