Ridley Scott is the focus of an in-depth new look at his upcoming sci-fi thriller Prometheus, which is included in the May 25th edition of The Hollywood Reporter. For one, I am only 35 years old, and I have only lived in Hollywood since 2008, so this massive and incredible stretch of road, reconstructed with 1987-style buildings in downtown Miami, struck me as both familiar and unfamiliar at the same time. For instance, the huge Guitar Center on Sunset was present, but 80s staples like Tower Records, which doesn't exist on today's "Strip," was right next door. Of course, one of the other big changes was The Bourbon Room. The fictional club lies at the heart of this musical, which Chris D'Arienzo adapted from his own award-winning stage play.

While Rock of Ages is an ensemble of massive proportions, with stars such as Tom Cruise, Alec Baldwin, Bryan Cranston, Catherine Zeta-Jones, Paul Giamatti, and Russell Brand populating the cast, the musical truly centers on Drew (Diego Boneta) and Sherrie (Julianne Hough), who are both chasing their dreams in TinselTown. As we all know, dreams don't pay the rent, though, so Drew has been working at The Bourbon Room as a part of the house band, where he meets Sherrie, fresh off the bus from the Midwest.

Yesterday, we showed you a clip featuring Mary J. Blige performing "Any Way You Want It," and an audio sample with Tom Cruise's performance of "Pour Some Sugar on Me." Sadly, we didn't get to speak with either actor on the set, but director Adam Shankman did show us the full "Pour Some Sugar On Me" performance... and I have to say, prepare for a Tom Cruise you have never seen before.

We were able to speak with Julianne Hough, Diego Boneta, director Adam Shankman, and production designer John Huttman during our time on the set. I can't quite share those interviews with you quite yet, but stay tuned for my full set visit piece coming in the next few weeks.

So when Kevin Feige revealed yesterday that two as-yet-unnamed Marvel franchise movies were going to be announced soon, most assumed that this upcoming tie-in to Marvel's The Avengers was not going to be appearing on that impending production slate.

Now, though, if we are to believe Edgar Wright himself, Ant-Man is one of those two impending Marvel stand-alone adventures. First, he gave the Empire Podcase this quote.

/film then reached out to Edgar Wright to clarify that he was indeed talking about shooting Ant-Man this year, not just The World's End. The director confirmed that, stating the following.

So, it looks like he is taking a page from his The Adventures of Tintin collaborator Steven Spielberg by attempting to shoot these two movies in the same year. Its possible one or both productions could bleed into 2013. It's also possible that neither film could go before cameras at all this year.

Ant-Man is in development . The film is directed by Edgar Wright.

We recently caught up with director Parris Patton to discuss the DVD release, which is in stores starting today, Tuesday, May 15th.

Here is our conversation.

Obvious, stupid question first...Are you related to Mike Patton?

Parris Patton: No. Not at all. I saw a video...I forgot what it was for...But strangely enough, he looks a lot like me. I haven't been following his new projects so much. But, you know, from the old days...Yeah, I'm a fan.

The most compelling aspect of the movie, for me at least, are these kids in this van, who tour alongside the Warped Tour, stopping at every venue to sell their CDs. Can you give us an update on where they're at right now?

Parris Patton: Joe Candelaria and the guys from Forever Came Calling have a new drummer. They signed a little indie deal. They were offered a couple of things because of the film, actually. But they didn't feel they were up to that level. They had a few people approach them about working together. But it felt above their pay scale. They are very humble, and they know where they belong, basically. There was a little indie record label that picked them up. And I think they are going to start touring again in two weeks. They are always touring. They are in the same van. The music is better. They have an album they are releasing, I think, right before they go out on tour. It might be coming out now. I am not 100% sure. I just spoke to Joe last week. He is doing really good. Chillin' at 29 Palms, just getting ready to go back out on the road. There's a lot happening with those guys.

When you say 'same van', did they get that thing fixed?

Parris Patton: Well, you know...They fix it as it breaks. They still don't have any money. Something goes wrong, they fix it up. It hasn't been given a complete overhaul or anything. No.

How did you find those guys?

Parris Patton: I stumbled upon them as you are watching the film. I was already filming when I met them. I was doing fan interviews down the line before we went into cover the bands we were doing. I saw this guy selling CDs in line. I liked him immediately. So I listened to his music. He made me realize that there is this whole subculture of people who do that. They sell CDs in line, trying to make it from one city to the next in hopes of being pulled out of the line and put on stage. His music and his story, and his personality, was appealing to me. So I decided to follow them throughout. I met them in San Francisco, which I think was, maybe, the third stop...Something like that. It was the second or third stop. So I met them the moment the audience meets them.

What do you think they brought that might not have been there had you not done those line interviews?

Parris Patton: What was needed to make this film more than just a concert documentary...And I tried to do this with everybody...Was just to dig into the personal stories of these musicians. It's not what you see on stage. It's not what you think they are going to be, really...But Joe's journey was full of peril. While everyone who is in a band on The Warped Tour...If you get on The Warped Tour, you get a guaranteed, and the bands spend some of that guaranteed getting on a bus. Because the tour is so brutal. Doing it in a van is ridiculous. But obviously, Joe didn't have that. He had to take a pretty brutal journey to accomplish his dream. That is what a great journey is made of. Without that...I think about that often...I don't know what I would have done. I would have had a completely different film. Adding that story gave the film some heart, and a true arc, through his character. That is what Joe brought to this story, and I don't know what I would have done without that.

So much time has passed since you shot this to right now, today. What do you think about the progress in that span of time, that these guys we are watching, have made?

Parris Patton: Yeah, you know...I haven't kept up with Mark Posner. I saw Chris Drew at one of our in-store parties. He seems to be doing the same thing he was doing. He just has a million fans, and he is touring all the time. Mitch from Suicide Silence, I have seen him a couple of times. They are doing exactly what they are doing in the film in a lot of ways. Just trying to figure out how to reach more people, and touring. That is what it's all about. I don't know if Posner is sitting in s studio somewhere, reaping the benefits of his radio success. For the most part, it's still a grind for these guys. Obviously, they love it. But it is just so hard to get to that level where you don't need to be on the road. It takes a long time and a massive amount of fans, obviously. It seems like most of them are doing what they were doing, just with a lot more fans. Because they have been out there longer.

You end the film with Pennywise, right?

Parris Patton: They are in there. I don't think they are the actual end of the film. The actual last word goes to The Exposed. They were like a catering band. It was one of the stories that didn't really make it into the film. But I thought he summed it up nicely, like, when how you get off the road you see your girlfriend, your pets, your family, and then within a week, you are itching to get back on the road. But Pennywise is in there. And Fletcher has great interview. He gave us the title to the film. It was great having access to those guys.

You don't focus too much on some of these bigger bands, who've been touring with The Warped Tour since it started. I'm forty years old, and I didn't know most of these guys that get the majority of the spotlight here.

Parris Patton: Me neither. You know, it kind of worked out this way. Andrew W.K. was the headliner, and we did get a lot of great interviews with him. And some great performances. We got them from everybody. But they just didn't fit into the film. It felt like the film was more wanting to be about kids on the rise, and how The Warped Tour helps to accommodate that. It felt like the film wanted to go that way. I'm trying to think of who else...The Casualties were there. But only on the last bit of the tour. Some of the biggest bands were only there for the last few days. Like the Dropkick Murphys, the Casualties, even Pennywise. I don't know that they did the entire tour. They may have, but we didn't catch up with them until the end. It was like that. This is where the film wanted to go. I think a lot of people were expecting to see more of a punk rock retrospective type thing. The truth is, most of the bands on the Warped Tour, for the most part, are new. Kevin Lyman is always looking to see who is going to be big in the following year. What are the kids listening to now? Not what do 40 year olds want to see that they saw twenty years ago...Well, it was seventeen years ago...A lot of it has to do with Kevin Lyman looking ahead. We would give Kevin Lyman CDs for his daughter to listen to. He was choosing bands for the tour that way. That shows you were he thinks the audience is, to keep the show going.

That's where it needs to be. I'm not going to the Warped Tour anytime soon, I don't care who is playing. It's a kids demographic.

Parris Patton: Yeah.

How did you mix the interviews with the behind-the-scenes footage to build the narrative arc you were after?

Parris Patton: I wanted the film to be as verite as possible. I really wanted to plant the audience on the tour, so it felt like they were experiencing it. A lot of the B roll photography, watching the crews set up, and stuff like that...It had to do with giving a sense of what it's like to be out there...With the interviews, they were more about the personal stories. You can try for fifteen and a half months to film a certain event, like a stage dive, or some fantastic thing that happens on the tour to make the film remarkable...Chances are, something like that...If it does happen, you're not going to get it...What you can do is go back to the stories about the people, and how they are feeling about the whole thing. That was the mentality going in. By interviewing Kevin Lyman, and the crewmembers that set it all up...That gives audiences a sense of the family that really makes this thing run. I tried not to say that, I just wanted people to experience that. So I added as little commentary as possible. That's why there is no voice over in the film. We just try to let it play out as naturally as possible.

I've only seen the theatrical release. What can we expect to see on the DVD in terms of extra content?

Parris Patton: I was really happy to have a ton of footage. I shot nearly three hundred hours of footage. When it came to doing the DVD extras, all the bands that I, unfortunately, couldn't put into the film...I was able to put together a nice little piece on each one of them. There are about ten eight-to-twelve minute pieces on the bands that I followed, that didn't make the film. You get some of the bigger names, like Bring Me The Horizon, The Casualties, and Pennywise. Then there were the smaller guys I followed quite a bit. They just didn't make it into the film. I am really happy with the bonus pack. I hope people check it out. I think it adds quite a bit. I think we wound up with great bonus material just by virtue of having so much stuff.

Prometheus is only a mere three weeks away, so why 20th Century Fox keeps offering up more and more creepy Alien-like footage full of monster spoilers just doesn't make sense. Everyone I know wants to see it, but I only know three people, tops. So, I guess it's not tracking as well as it could be, especially with that R rating in international markets. Its best to hold your anticipation in check and avoid this latest look at the film. If you just can't help yourself, be aware, a couple of awesome moments are hinted at or given away complete. You've been warned. But like a hobo who can't read, I know you're only going to crawl over this barbed wire fence to be mauled by a rabid hound. And you'll be pissed about it all day long. Marvel's The Avengers is proving to be the phenomenon of the summer, reaching over $1 billion in ticket sales after only 19 days on screen. In the midst of all the excitement, Marvel President Kevin Feige has revealed that two unnamed Marvel films are on the verge of being announced for production in the very near future. Of course, he didn't give any hints about which two superhero franchises these could be.

Speculation is already running rampant about which two films he is referring two. Ant-Man is unlikely, as director Edgar Wright already has his 2013-2014 slate full with The World's End and The Night Stalker. So that leaves the films we already known to be in the pipeline, which include Black Panther, Doctor Strange, The Guardians of the Galaxy, and possibly Iron Fist. Though, both upcoming titles may also be movies we've not yet heard batted about.

What do you hope the next two as-yet-unnamed Marvel superhero films will be? We're betting on a third stand-alone Hulk reboot ourselves.

With not a second to spare, director Robert Rodriguez is moving forward fast on sequels Sin City: A Dame to Kill For and Machete Kills, shooting both before summer's end for release in 2013. Earlier today, we got the first teaser poster for Sin City 2. Now comes the second teaser poster for Grindhouse spin-off Machete Kills. Check it out!

Back in January, I traveled up to the LAIKA Studios facility in Hillsboro, Oregon, a sprawling 150,000 square-foot complex which houses hundreds of talented artists, designers, animators, and technicians. This was my first time visiting the set of a stop-motion animation project, and I wasn't quite sure what to expect. It didn't take long before I was blown away by the whole process, and their painstaking attention to detail. We were met by Georgina Hayns (creative superviser/puppet fabrication) and Brian McLean (Director of rapid prototype), who showed us around this massive facility.

We were first shown a huge array of maquettes for each of the characters, and right away, it was clear that this innovative project is well ahead of the curve. Here's what Georgina Hayns told us about their process for making the very unique faces

The other form they use is facial replacement. While the format has been around for many years (they employed this technology for Jack Skellington in The Nightmare Before Christmas), ParaNorman is the first movie to use a "3D color printer" to make replacement faces for each of the characters. The main character Norman (voiced by Kodi Smit-McPhee) has over 8,000 faces, all of which have moveable lips and eyebrows and allow for a whopping 1.5 million possible facial expressions. We were lead into a room and shown how this 3D printer works. They use this fascinating device to create replacement faces and props the characters use in the film. Here's what Brian McLean had to say about LAIKA's use of this emerging technology.

After the footage presentation, we were lead into another set area where we met Travis Knight, the President and CEO of LAIKA, who also serves as a producer and lead animator on ParaNorman. When we walked in, the executive was working on an elaborate set where Norman is standing under a tree. You won't find too many studio CEOs who have such a hands-on role in their films, but Travis Knight is obviously not your typical executive. Here's what he had to say below.

Travis Knight - Producer and LAIKA CEO/President

How do you keep track of where you are?

Travis Knight: There is so much stuff to keep track of. Each puppet has dozens of points on the body, the eyes, fingers, elbows, everything. Sometimes there are environmental effects, things that are blowing in the wind. It's a lot of stuff to keep track of. People think that what it takes to do stop-motion is patience. It's actually not that. It's the ability to focus for long periods of time. It is mentally taxing, but fortunately, with the advancement of technology, we have this frame grab system, which allow us to see where we're going. We can keep track of our performances, which aren't hindered by this very difficult process. We have these tiny, small-scale things, which aren't supposed to look like small-scale things. There is a lot of things to keep track of, which is why there aren't many people doing this.

What has changed the most, for the better, coming from Coraline to this? How has the technology advanced which makes things easier for you guys?

Travis Knight: On Coraline, it was the first time that anyone had used this rapid prototyping technology for facial animation. With Coraline, we thought, 'How could we integrate the best of digital technology into this age-old art form?' It's an anachronistic way of making movies. It hasn't really changed much in 100 years. We revolutionized that, but everything still had to be hand painted. On this film, we found a way to effectively print the facial textures in the objects. We didn't have to hand paint them. By doing that, you're able to get really beautiful, subtle gradation. You can see he has these ruddy cheeks. We have the grandma character who has these burst blood vessels in her face, and we have this character, Neil, who has thousands of freckles on his face. Because of the material, which is this powdery material which we coat with, basically, Super Glue, it has this really translucent quality, which is much more like actual skin. If Norman stands in front of the light, you can see his ears glow. It's really about trying to find ways to integrate high technology into this low-fi way of making movies, which hasn't changed much. It's technology and craft smashing into each other.

Coraline looked almost like claymation at times, whereas this is so much smoother.

Travis Knight: There is a difference in the approach to the animation style. Coraline was more theatrical. This film, because of the subject matter, we really pushed hard for this skewed naturalism. I wouldn't say more realistic, but it does have a more natural quality. It's very well observed, the acting choices in the way these characters move. They all are things animators think about people doing, little tics, and it all comes down to those tiny little bits of execution, which gives it that much more vitality. You see it in the performances in the animation.

Travis Knight: One of the things that is exciting and draining about this process, for me, is that there is no set schedule on any of my days. It's a weird thing, when you're working on a shot, focusing on the tiniest bit of minutae, the tiniest bit of movement in fractions of seconds, and then have to shift gears when I have to go to a board meeting. It can be a challenge, but I think one of the things that prepared me for it is working in stop-motion. Being able to keep track of all these things, focus on the tiniest bits, and then being able to extricate yourself from that. It's that, just on a bigger scale. The last handful of years for me, is really a portrait of an artist finding his inner executive. It's been kind of a strange journey for me, but one of the main things that helped me was, as an artist, I just have to trust my instincts. It's the same thing while working on the business side. I found that when I trust my instincts, things tend to go well, and when I question them, they don't. It's a challenge, yeah, but it's all fun.

Does the animator in you tend to get more annoyed with the CEO in you, or does the CEO get annoyed with the animator?

Travis Knight: Oh, God. There are times when it's getting stressed out about the business, then coming down to focus on a shot, something I can control very precisely. There is kind of a solace to it. Then, when the puppet won't do what I want it to do, I want to run kicking and screaming out of this place and never come back. There are wonderful things about both, and there are challenging things about both.

Can you talk about what specifically drew you to the story, as a follow-up to Coraline?

Travis Knight: It's an interesting thing. We want to do films that are bold, distinctive, enduring, things that are timeless, things that are brave, and really distinctive. Coraline was all those things. We didn't want to repeat ourselves, but (writer-director) Chris Butler had this idea for this story, that immediately resonated with me. It combined all of these wonderful things I loved while growing up. It's got the George A. Romero zombies running around, it's got this John Hughes coming-of-age quality, and it's done in stop-motion, this beautiful Ray Harryhausen style of animation. It's a lot of fun, it's a thrill-ride, it's kind of a comedic, coming-of-age thing, but at the same time, when you really get into the film, there's something much deeper happening. It's really emotionally resonant. I think for the people who do stop-motion, in many ways, the story of ParaNorman is the story of the people who made it. We are freaks. We're strange people, but we're people who have extraordinary gifts. You look at this crew, it is unbelievable, the things these people can do. There is an autobiographical quality of this movie, and the people who made it, which is perfect. At the end of the day, I think there is an emotional resonance that I think people will respond to.

This has a darker theme than Coraline. Is that going to be a continuing trend?

Travis Knight: We don't want to repeat ourselves. We don't want to keep doing the same kind of movie. When I look at our slate, I'm impressed by its variety. At the same time, we're not going to shy away from that sort of thing. If something needs to be intense for the sake of the story being stronger, we'll make it that way. We're not going to water it down. We didn't on Coraline, and we're definitely not on ParaNorman. If you look at the classic Disney films, they were dark. It's interesting to see how animation has progressed. It's gotten safe, and I don't think that's the best thing, to only have those kinds of stories. I think kids and families really do benefit from being challenged by the subject matter. It's in a great tradition of Disney animated films, and family films, that have gotten lost along the way.

Can you talk about the cameras you're shooting with?

And you're shooting in 3D?

Travis Knight: Yeah. Every single camera is set up with a motion control rig. At the very least, they all have these little sliders. When you capture a frame, it takes the left eye, and then it slides over slightly and takes the right eye image. When you put them through the project, it gives you a sense of depth. The way we figured it out was, the distance it travels, is the distance between the puppet's two eyes, so it's just a tiny little bit.

So you don't need the two different cameras?

Travis Knight: You couldn't. You couldn't put two cameras close enough together. That was the thing, we wondered if we would need two cameras for every shot. As we sorted it out, we figured out that if we're in this world, if we're in this space, the distance between the two eyes would be just this little amount, and it was.

After speaking with Travis Knight, we were introduced to production designer Nelson Lowry, who showed us a vast array of tiny props (cell phones, pizza boxes, vending machines) and discussed the overall aesthetic they're going for in ParaNorman.

He also showed us a number of sets, such as Pendergast's house, the town's Main Street, and an incredibly elaborate town hall set, which was just stunning, and based on a town square in Salem, Massachussetts. Nelson Lowry mentioned before that all of the sets were to contain no straight lines or perfect circles. Everything is slightly askew, in one way or another, which will also help set this movie apart. As I was walking around the set, something caught my eye. I saw a tiny coffee lid on the sidewalk that circles the town square. They obviously could have gotten away with not having a coffee lid lying on a sidewalk, but the fact that they actually thought that needed to be there, and took the time to craft a half-inch coffee lid, really speaks volumes about how detail-oriented these LAIKA folks really are.

Chris, this was your idea, right?

Chris Butler: Quite a long time ago, I came up with the idea, and I was writing it on and off. I was working on storyboards for a lot of projects. The first idea was I wanted to do a zombie movie for kids, and it kind of grew into something else, like John Carpenter meets John Hughes.

Sam Fell: It kind of morphed into something else, this eclectic group of kids. Norman's story is certainly more important than the zombies. It's not a zombie script.

I noticed in the footage, you have the Friday The 13th theme as a ringtone. I was wondering if there are any other horror franchises you take shots at here?

Was it always going to be stop-motion?

Chris Butler: Absolutely. It made absolute sense to do zombies in stop-motion. It has such a rich history of supernatural, creepy stuff. Some people, when they first read the script, said, 'This is a live-action script,' almost like that was a bad thing. There tends to be such a formula for animation, and this veers away from that formula.

Sam Fell: We wanted to see the rough edges. Often times, with animation, it creates a world that's fantastic and whimsical, but it's unreal because it's perfect. It made visual sense to make the town kind of crappy, but beautiful crappy.

The town itself really seems obsessed with the horror genre. Can you talk about that aspect?

Chris Butler: This town basically has very little going for it, other than this haunted witch hanging around, so they built the tourism trade around that. There are two little things. One is our own horror references, which is peripheral, but the town itself, is just a desperate attempt to cash in on this hanging of the witch 300 years ago.

Sam Fell: We looked at Salem, but it's basically the crappy version of Salem.

Was there anything in the script that you couldn't technically achieve in stop-motion, and you had to leave behind?

Sam Fell: There was a revolution starting already with Coraline. They had their own, in-house visual effects department. If you do green screen, it costs the earth if you go out of house.

Can you talk about bringing the voice cast together, and the things you were looking for?

Sam Fell: It's an ensemble piece. It's comic, but it has a serious edge, and we wanted actors who could do both. We didn't just want big funny voices, and we didn't want to cast adults as kids. It's definitely from the kids' perspective, so it was really important to us to get a really good child actor. We ended up with two amazing child actors, with Kodi Smit-McPhee, who does Norman, and then, for his best friend Neil, we found this undiscovered, at the time, kid named Tucker Albrizzi. He basically is Neil, which was kind of cool. We were really aiming for natural performances, and he brought something that I don't think you can ever plan for. He's just so weird, in a good way. It feels so real. Having said that, we do have Christopher Mintz-Plasse playing a 14-year-old, but that does feel appropriate, because this particular character has been held back so much in school.

Can you talk about working with Travis Knight as an animator?

Chris Butler: If he was a crap animator, it would be problematic, but he is probably one of the best animators in the world, he really is. How many places have a CEO who is animating? It's unreal.

That about wraps it up for my day on the set of ParaNorman, which arrives in theaters August 17. It was incredible to get a glimpse inside this motion-capture world. It definitely isn't as glamorous as your garden variety movie set, but it's certainly a unique and fascinating art form that I'm glad to have seen first-hand.

Josh Trank is a filmmaker who certainly has a bright future ahead of him, after his impressive directorial debut Chronicle. The 27-year-old cut his teeth as a co-producer of Big Fan, and he wrote and directed several episodes of The Kill Point before his big break with Chronicle, a movie that manages to look and feel like it cost a lot more than it actually did. Chronicle arrives on Blu-ray and DVD May 15, and I recently had the chance to speak with Josh Trank over the phone.

Here's what he had to say below.

I was actually at the Fox presentation on the lot, where you showed us some of the footage, and that awesome short film you made. I was hoping to see it on the Blu-ray or DVD, but it doesn't seem to be on there. Is there any possibility of it being an easter egg or something?

Josh Trank: The test scene? Oh, I think the test scene is going to be on the DVD. Yeah, it's very exciting. I just saw it for the first time since then, and it was weird. It was like all that anxiety bubbled up again.

How long did it take you to shoot that?

Josh Trank: One day, just a day. We cast the thing in about a day and a half or two days, we shot it in a day, and then we did a week of post to do all the visual effects. It was a rush.

You mentioned before, when you were casting Chronicle, how difficult it was to find Andrew. Can you elaborate on that casting search some more? When you saw Dane DeHaan, did you know right away you had your guy?

Josh Trank: Yeah, it was instant. He was somebody that I and our producer, Adam Schroeder, had spotted from HBO's In Treatment. When asked by our casting director, who would be our perfect Andrew, both of us were immediately drawn to Dane DeHaan. We said, 'If we could get a guy like Dane DeHaan...' and we were just lucky enough that he loved the script and wanted to do it. We didn't need to find somebody like him, we got the guy.

It looks like there is just one deleted scene in here. Would it be safe to assume that practically everything you shot made it in to the feature?

Josh Trank: Well, not everything we shot ended up in the movie itself. There are certainly a lot of scenes that were left on the cutting room floor. The director's cut on the DVD was great, because I got to throw in some more stuff that I really feel paints a deeper dimension to some of the characters in the movie. I'm very excited about that.

How much longer is that director's cut than the theatrical cut?

Josh Trank: You'd think that I should be really good with time and stuff like that, but numbers are so abstract to me. Five minutes? 10 minutes? 25 minutes? I have no idea. I can tell you that it's long enough to make it better. I don't even remember how much longer it is, but I know we definitely did throw in a substantial amount, which I thought was missing from the original cut.

Is the additional material more from the beginning, when they're trying to figure out these powers? Or is there more towards the end?

Josh Trank: There is more stuff in the beginning. Here is a cool one. My favorite shot I got to do in the whole movie, which I'm not going to reveal, obviously, while on set I announced to everyone this was the coolest thing I've ever seen on the monitor, and it happened live. It's one of the coolest shots I've ever seen planned out and executed. I myself, separated from my own body in that moment, and took a step back. That was one of the first scenes to go from the actual cut of the film, and I'm very excited that it's going to be in the director's cut, so you'll have something to look forward to there. I challenge anybody to be able to spot that shot. It will be pretty obvious.

Great. I'm looking forward to it even more now. We talked before about the car scene, and there are some visually stunning moments I really enjoyed. When Max (Landis) was writing the script, were you planning these out that far ahead in advance, or was it more on the set, trying to figure out how to get these in camera?

Josh Trank: No, it was all very, very heavily planned out. I wrote up about a five-page long director's statement, which served as sort of the bible of the production plan moving forward. That included the approach to the camera work, which is a controlled amateurism. You assume the main character of this so-called found footage movie, is not a neurotic guy running from somebody, causing the camera to shake in a nauseating manner. There is that one person that everybody knows who can hold a camera steady, and has an eye for framing up his world. When somebody is saying something important, he impulsively knows to zoom in or get a close-up. We didn't want the style of the movie or that plan to create too much self-awareness in the audience, so there was a lot of trial and error, and things we would eventually work out on set, because you never know until you get there. I storyboarded every scene about 20 different ways, we did pre-viz on a lot of the more complicated set pieces, so we could essentially try things out before we shot them, particularly the third-act battle sequence and the flying sequences. So yeah, there was a lot of planning before we got to the day, but it was a very quick, rushed schedule.

There was a story going around that (20th Century Fox president) Tom Rothman is still hoping you will come on board for the Fantastic Four reboot. Is there anything you can say about that?

Josh Trank: It's really hilarious, almost like my answers are timed, in a way that I'm aware of subconsciously, because I just got the wrap-up (Laughs). I can't say anything about anything, in general. I always feel that you can't talk about the drawing until you're done with the drawing. That said, there is a lot of amazing stuff ahead, so you have a lot to look forward to.

We also reported awhile back that Max is writing a Chronicle sequel. Are you involved in writing that as well?

Josh Trank: Can't answer any of that. Sorry, my friend.

I loved the theatrical experience of Chronicle, but do you think that there is more value in seeing this at home on Blu-ray?

Josh Trank: I think it's the kind of movie where it's like big screen meets small screen. It's ostensibly shot by people who weren't intending on having their footage projected on a large screen. I think the experience will be both unique to the movie theater as well as the home theater. That was my perfectly-phrased, press release-y thing to say about that (Laughs).

The original 1995 Judge Dredd upset some fans due to the amount of screen time it gave star Sylvester Stallone's face. A judge never removes his helmet. Well, the 2012 reboot seems to be holding true to its promise that we won't be seeing much of Karl Urban's beautiful profile. Which is keeping purists happy. Sad thing is, it means all the pics we get from the film look quite similar. Here, we have two more photos from Dredd, offering a masked Karl Urban once again. Hopefully a trailer will arrive soon, proving this action-heavy comic book reboot is more than just a grumpy mouth with a gun.
